Strong: 'We didn't do a good job of coaching'
Texas coach Charlie Strong delivered his strongest comments yet regarding the Miami rumors, saying he isn't going anywhere.
Strong said he sent that message to his players prior to meeting with the media for his weekly Monday press conference. Strong said: "I'm here for the duration and I'm here to stay."
The second-year Longhorns coach also placed full blame on himself and his coaching staff for Texas' 10-13 record under his guidance. Texas has to win its final two games against Texas Tech and Baylor to win six games and qualify for a bowl berth.
"There's no self-pity." Strong said. "A lot of times when you're in the position you're in, it's because of what you did to yourself. We didn't do a good job of coaching. If we did a better job of coaching, we wouldn't be in this position."
Strong recently received support from Texas interim athletic director Mike Perrin, who told Austin's 104.9 FM that Strong is staying put.
Strong decided not to make offensive staff or personnel changes over the offseason despite little improvement throughout the 2014 season, and even regression over the final two games in blowout losses to TCU and Arkansas in the Texas Bowl.
But after Texas failed to deliver a competent offensive attack in the season-opening 38-3 loss at Notre Dame, Strong stripped offensive coordinator Shawn Watson of his play-calling duties and replaced quarterback Tyrone Swoopes with Jerrod Heard.
Wide receivers coach Jay Norvell took over as the play-caller. Still, Texas' offense ranks just eighth in total offense and ninth in scoring in the 10-team Big 12.
