Sources: LSU's Mills fractures fibula in practice, likely out 4-6 weeks

The LSU Tigers may have suffered a big blow Wednesday as senior Jalen Mills reportedly injured his leg in practice, FOX Sports College Football Insider Bruce Feldman confirmed.

Mills suffered a fractured fibula and is likely to miss four to six weeks.

The Times-Picayune was the first to report the news.

Mills won't be needed for the Tigers to beat McNeese State in the opener, but the Week Two contest in Starkville against Mississippi State could spell trouble for LSU if Mills misses the game. The Bulldogs look to be led by quarterback Dak Prescott and a deep and talented receiving corp on offense this season.

Mills had been penciled in as a starter at safety for LSU after turning down an early opportunity to enter his name into the 2015 NFL Draft. Mills has started all 39 games in his LSU career, playing both corner and safety for the team.

LSU, having perhaps the deepest defensive backfield in the nation, certainly has the talent to replace Mills, but any player manning the secondary in Baton Rouge cannot duplicate his on-the-field experience. Expect junior Rickey Jefferson to step into the team's starting safety role should Mills be out.
