Penn State offensive line coach a hit in the kitchen
Rarely is cooking too often for players a potential NCAA violation college football coaches have to fear, but For The Win/USA Today reports that is one the Penn State compliance department has to keep an eye on these days in Happy Valley.
The reason?
Offensive line coach Herb Hand's dishes, including brisket, crab cakes benedict and bacon-wrapped jalapeño poppers, are just that good.
“Literally his brisket is the greatest food I’ve ever eaten. The greatest meat I’ve ever had in my life,” Nittany Lion lineman Andrew Nelson told USA Today about a June cookout Hand hosted. “I remember I must have had like three plates of it and I was just sitting there afterwards like in a food coma.”
College football players come from all sorts of places and have all sorts of backgrounds, but everyone has to eat, so it's understandable this could be an appealing if unusual skill for a coach to have.
Hand, who is also regarded as one of the best in the business of his actual, well, business, told the site he has been cooking since he was 11 and watches cooking shows to unwind after a long day of practice.
Per NCAA rules, though, he can only cook for his players "occasionally," but maybe that just makes cookouts such as the one in June that much more special for Hand and the Nittany Lions.
“For me, to make a meal for somebody, it’s kind of like my way to express my love for them," Hand said. "It’s an expression of love.”
