N.C. A&T's Broadway retires; Washington takes over
(STATS) - North Carolina A&T coach Rod Broadway found the perfect way to retire on Monday.
Broadway announced his retirement following a 39-year career, including the last 15 as a head coach. In his seventh and final season at N.C. A&T, the Aggies went 12-0 to set a school record for wins and become the first unbeaten team in MEAC history. They captured the Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl for the second time.
The 62-year-old went 57-22 with the Aggies and was 125-45 overall, including stints at North Carolina Central (2003-06) and Grambling State (2007-10). He guided all three programs to HBCU national titles with this season's crown his second at N.C. A&T and fourth overall. The Aggies finished seventh in the STATS FCS Top 25 as the only unbeaten team in the subdivision.
Broadway will serve as a special assistant to athletics director Earl M. Hilton III for the next six months. Assistant head coach, defensive coordinator and secondary coach Sam Washington was named the school's 19th head coach.
"While we are losing one of the greatest coaches of all time, I love that he gets to go out on his own terms, a luxury not afforded to most coaches," Hilton said. "He took our football program from being the laughing stock of the (FCS) to being the envy of black college football and one of the premier programs on the FCS level. He did it with class and intelligence."
Broadway, Washington and Hilton will take part in a news conference on campus Tuesday.
