Michigan Football: Mike McCray's Return Welcome News for Wolverines
Michigan football got some good news Tuesday, as head coach Jim Harbaugh said linebacker Mike McCray told him he would be back for his senior season.
While some Michigan football fans might have spent the day worrying about the status of head coach Jim Harbaugh, there was some good news that came about.
Harbaugh, who told his players that the NFL rumors were “lies created by our enemies“, actually had some news his own to report, as he informed Mark Synder of the Detroit Free Pres, that linebacker Mike McCray intends to return to Michigan football next season.
McCray, who will be returning to Michigan for a fifth season, had his best year in Ann Arbor in 2016, racking up 69 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, six passes defensed, an interception, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.
For his efforts McCray was rewarded this season with Honorable Mention honors on the coaches All-Big Ten team. He also earned Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors.
McCray won the award after registering nine tackles, 3.5 TFL, two sacks and forced fumble in the Wolverines win over Hawaii.
Overall, the news is good for Michigan football. The Wolverines are going to suffer heavy losses at linebacker with Jabrill Peppers probably headed to the NFL and Ben Gedeon being a senior.
However, those aren’t the only losses.
Michigan football will lose other key players, both in the secondary and up front. That means, getting any experience back, is valuable.
McCray isn’t a superstar. But in 2016, he showed he has to the potential to be one. He’s athletic and has a habit of making big plays and his presence will be a welcoming site in UM’s front seven.
Michigan football is going to lose a lot of talent in the coming months. Thankfully, according to Harbaugh, McCray won’t be part of the exodus.
