Meyer explains why long snapper got Ohio State offer

Published Jun. 30, 2015 5:07 p.m. ET

Although the wisdom of giving a four-year scholarship to a high school long snapper might be debatable, Urban Meyer's competitiveness is not.

The Ohio State football coach proved as much again in explaining to 2015 OSU signee Liam McCullough why he was upgrading an offer to be a preferred walk-on to to one for a full scholarship last year after Michigan State stepped up with the latter.

"When I went in that February (2014) and talked with Coach Meyer, that was a big thing that he stressed," McCullough told Elevenwarriors.com. "He basically told me 'I'm not going to lose you to a school out of state, especially Michigan State.' He said he didn't like Michigan State. He said he wasn't going to lose me to a team out of state."

What Urban Meyer wants, Urban Meyer usually gets. In this case, that meant a verbal commitment from McCullough, a long snapper from Worthington Kilbourne in central Ohio who signed last winter.
