Maryland Football: Yannick Ngakoue records strip-sack

Former Maryland star Yannick Ngakoue is already making a name for himself at the NFL level.

For the second consecutive week, Ngakoue recorded a strip-sack for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Late in the second quarter of Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens, Ngakoue was able to beat rookie left tackle Ronnie Stanley at the line of scrimmage. Ngakoue blew by Stanley and was able to knock the ball out of Joe Flacco’s hands.

Ngakoue made a similar play last week against the San Diego Chargers. The former Terp stripped the ball from Philip Rivers in Week 2.

In three games, Ngakoue has registered six tackles, two sacks, and two forced fumbles. He was selected in the third round (No. 69 overall) by the Jaguars in the 2016 NFL Draft.

Ngakoue was one of three Terps to be selected along with Sean Davis (Pittsburgh Steelers) and Quinton Jefferson (Seattle Seahawks).

Ngakoue seems to have picked up right where he left off at Maryland. As a junior, the former Friendship Collegiate Academy (D.C.) standout set the single-season record for sacks (13.5).

When his Terrapin career was finished, Ngakoue accumulated 83 tackles (57 solo), 21.5 sacks, three pass breakups, and two forced fumbles. He also recorded 32.5 tackles-for-loss and was arguably one of the most talented players of the Randy Edsall era.

Ngakoue came to College Park as a four-star recruit. He ended up choosing the Terps over the likes of Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Michigan, Notre Dame, and Ohio State.

Ngakoue has made a living as a pass rusher with a relentless motor. Needless to say, a very successful NFL career could be ahead of him if he keeps playing at this pace.
