College Gameday: Lee Corso Picks Tennessee at Battle at Bristol; Dale Earnhardt Jr. & Desmond Howard Pick Virginia Tech

Lee Corso picked the Tennessee Volunteers to beat Virginia Tech on College Gameday. But Desmond Howard and Dale Earnhardt Jr. picked the Hokies.

There’s good news and bad news to the College Gameday picks. The bad news is that Lee Corso was 6-12 last year in mascot picks, and he also missed the first mascot pick this year with the LSU-Wisconsin game last week.

The good news?

Corso is perfect in mascot picks involving the Virginia Tech Hokies. On Saturday, he picked the Vols to emerge victorious in the Battle at Bristol.

He faked out everybody at first by pulling out a coonskin hat, then throwing it away, suggesting he would go with Virginia Tech.

However, he then pulled out a Tennessee race car helmet.

The other guys who picked, however, did not show the Vols much love. Desmond Howard picked Virginia Tech, as did guest picker Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Howard cited the potential of Virginia Tech’s offense, and that’s not a bad analysis with Jerod Evans at quarterback and Justin Fuente calling the plays.

However, Earnhardt said that he has to pick Virginia Tech for personal reasons. So his analysis doesn’t really count.

Regardless, this game is clearly a lot more of a toss-up than people expected it to be.

Virginia Tech is deceivingly good, and the Vols have raised significant concerns after struggling last week against the Appalachian State Mountaineers.

Still, there was a bit of more good news beyond Corso. Kirk Herbstreit, who did not pick the game, said last week was an aberration for the Vols.

Perhaps it will help them refocus.

We’ll find out soon enough just how good of a job Butch Jones did in that regard.
