Clemson Football: Who replaces Hunter Renfrow?
Clemson football wide receiver Hunter Renfrow will be out for over a month with a hand injury. Who will replace him in his absence?
Hunter Renfrow, Clemson football’s most consistent offensive player to this point, suffered a hand injury against Troy and will miss at least a month after surgery.
Clemson coach Dabo Swinney announced on his Monday night radio show that the Tigers would be without Renfrow for an extended period of time.
“We thought Hunter was going to be fine, but the MRI on Monday showed a little crack below his thumb,” said Swinney. “He could play with it, but the injury would make it more difficult to hold on to the ball when he tried to tuck it away. He will have surgery to repair it and miss a few weeks. We hope to have him back for the NC State game, but certainly by the Florida State game after the open date.”
This is, without a doubt, a colossal blow to the underperforming Clemson football wide receiver corps, but the question is: Who will replace Renfrow?
The Tigers don’t really have another guy like Hunter.
More from Rubbing the Rock
Renfrow has the most sure hands on the team and does a great job blocking as well. That is hard to replace- especially when Clemson does not possess a pure slot wide receiver on the roster.
Trevion Thompson is listed as his backup, but I just have a hard time believing Thompson will get the start.
I could see Ray Ray McCloud moving from the field WR position to the slot or even see Artavis Scott move to the slot and allow a guy like Deon Cain or Ray Ray McCloud to play the field.
Could it also be a possibility that Cornell Powell moves over to the slot and he sees more playing time for the next few weeks?
I think that is definitely a possibility.
If you ask me, I believe your starting three wide receivers this Saturday will be Mike Williams, Artavis Scott, and Ray Ray McCloud.
You will then see Deon Cain, Trevion Thompson, and Cornell Powell man the backup positions.
This will be an interesting situation over the next few weeks to see if the other wide receivers around Renfrow step up and become more consistent. We’ve seen drops from Williams, Cain, and Thompson and that just can’t happen.
