Brandon Edwards scored 20 points and LaMarcus Reed had 15 and Texas-Arlington beat Texas Lutheran 88-45 on Friday night in the season opener for both teams.

Bryant Smith added 11 points for the Mavericks while Darius Richardson had 10 in a game that was all but over by the half, when Texas-Arlington took a 41-19 lead.

The Mavericks defense controlled the game as Texas-Arlington held Texas Lutheran to 28 percent shooting from the field. UTA shot 47 percent from the field and outrebounded the Bulldogs 47-29. The Mavericks forced Texas Lutheran into 27 turnovers.

Isaac Williams led Texas Lutheran with 15 points. Matthew Agonis added 10 and was the only other Bulldogs player to finish with double digits.

The Mavericks have now won a school-record five straight season openers.
