Southern U holds off Grambling State 59-53

GRAMBLING, La. (AP) Jared Sam and Tre Lynch combined for 29 points as Southern University held on to beat Grambling State 59-53 on Saturday night.

Sam finished with 16 points and Lynch had 13 for Southern (5-11, 2-1).

The Jaguars, which picked up their first road win of the season, held a 30-20 lead at the half and were ahead 49-31 midway of the second period. That's when the Tigers came charging back as Jefkins Agyeman-Budu nailed a 3-point jumper to start an 18-5 run and Grambling closed to 53-49 with two minutes left.

Christopher Hyder stole the ball and drove for a layup and Sam hit a jumper to give Southern a 57-51 lead with 37 seconds remaining to seal the win.

Mark Gray scored 14 and Chase Cormier had 10 for Grambling (2-11, 0-3).
