Nichols, St. Francis (NY) edge Sacred Heart 58-56
Travis Nichols' jumper with 1 second remaining gave St. Francis (N.Y.) a 58-56 victory over Sacred Heart on Saturday night.
Nichols, who scored all eight of his points in the second half, rebounded Brent Jones' missed layup with 3 seconds left for the Terriers (15-12, 12-4 Northeast Conference). Louis Montes had tied the game on a layup for the Pioneers with 28 seconds left.
Sacred Heart (13-16, 7-9) led 30-22 at halftime, but the Terriers tied the game three times in the first 4 minutes of the second half before going ahead 42-41 on Nichols' 3-pointer with 12:03 left. Neither team led by more than five points after that.
Akeem Johnson scored 16 points to lead St. Francis, including 12 in the second half when the Terriers shot 56 percent (14 of 25).
Shane Gibson, who came in averaging 22.2 points, got 21 for Sacred Heart and grabbed 12 rebounds.
