Hampton cruises past Savannah St. into to MEAC title game

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) Reginald Johnson Jr. scored 18, and Quinton Chievous had 15 points with 13 rebounds to help top-seeded Hampton beat No. 5 seed Savannah State 89-55 Friday in the semifinals of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament.

Brian Darden hit four 3s and finished with 14 points, while Lawrence Cooks scored 10 for Hampton, which has won seven of its last eight.

The Pirates (20-10) will face the South Carolina State-Norfolk State winner in the championship game Saturday.

Hampton took a 37-29 lead into the break before outscoring the Tigers (16-15) 52-26 in the second half.

Christopher Martin led Savannah State with 13 points, and Lenjo Kilo scored 12. The duo combined to make 9 of 20 field goal attempts while the rest of the teams shot just 30.3 percent (10 of 33) from the field.

Hampton shot a season-high 58 percent (29 of 50) and outrebounded the Tigers 36-20.
