Former Alabama head coach Anthony Grant is returning to Gainesville to become an assistant coach at Florida, reuniting him with longtime boss Billy Donovan.

Grant, who spent the six seasons leading the Crimson Tide, was fired after posting an 18-14 season in 2014-15. Grant led the Tide to just one NCAA tournament appearance, his third season in 2011-12. He also spent three years as head coach at VCU.

But Grant first made his name under Donovan, spending 10 seasons as a Gators assistant from 1996-2006 and also was on Donovan's staff at Marshall from 1994-96.

A spot came open on Donovan's staff when assistant Matt McCall accepted the head coaching position at Chattanooga.

"I'm extremely appreciative of Coach Donovan extending the opportunity to me to return to the University of Florida," Grant said. "It's a great chance to return a place I love and have fond memories of, and I look forward to helping the staff build on the tradition and success that Coach Donovan has created."

Grant was on the Gators staff that saw the team win the 2000 national championship game and win the title in 2006. He is a 1987 graduate of the University of Dayton, a school where he averaged 11.6 points and 6.7 rebounds and helped the Flyers reach the NCAA tournament twice.
