Diagnosed with severe injury
Cartagena has been diagnosed with a "high-grade" hamstring strain and will be out for the time being, according to Mike Gramajo of WESH 2 News.
Impact
Cartagena suffered the injury in the first game of the season and won't be able to feature for the time being. That said, the midfielder might return to action before the end of the 2026 season, although this type of injury typically commands a recovery period between 12 and 16 weeks. Colin Guske could benefit from an uptick in playing time with both Cartagena and Joran Gerbet (knee) absent.

He was expected to be active in a central midfield role in Joran Gerbet's (knee) absence, but now both players are at risk of missing upcoming matchups. Youngster Colin Guske could benefit from such situation to see increased action over the next few games.

Returning to Orlando

Impact
Cartagena has reestablished his link with Orlando and will remain with the team, as the midfielder signed a one-year deal for 2026 with an option for 2027. He has started in 20 of his 80 appearances with the club while bagging three goals and three assists, likely to resume a starting role once fit again.

Torn Achilles confirmed
Cartagena has been placed on the season-ending injury list due to a torn Achilles after receiving surgery, according to his club.
Impact
Cartagena's preseason fears have been met, as he will now miss the season due to a torn Achilles. This is a brutal turn for the midfielder, as he will miss the entire season and will now look to be fit for the start of the 2026 season. He was a regular starter in 2024, starting in 30 of his 32 appearances while notching one assist, so this is a tough loss for the club.

Active display in midfield
Cartagena generated four tackles (three won) and three clearances in Friday's 0-0 draw against Charlotte FC. Orlando City lost the game 3-1 via penalties.
Impact
Cartagena was busy on both ends of the pitch, and although the Peru international was unable to make a big impact in the final third, he was decisive on defense. Unfortunately for him, Charlotte was more accurate in the penalty shootout and won. Charlotte's win means these two sides will play a deciding match on Saturday to see which team advances to the next round of the 2024 MLS Playoffs.

Starts at Toronto
Cartagena (not injury related) is back among the starters for Wednesday's game versus Toronto.
Impact
Cartagena is ready to make his 13th start of the year after spending the last month with the Peru national team. The midfielder should remain in a defensive role, looking to rack up passes and tackles from that position. His inclusion in the lineup will move Nicolas Lodeiro to a substitute spot.

Back after international duty
Cartagena (not injury related) is back in training with Orlando City and could be an option to play Wednesday against DC United, Mike Gramajo of NBC Sports Orlando reports.
Impact
Cartagena was a regular for Peru in the Copa America, logging the full 90 in two of the team's three matches and also seeing time against Argentina. The central midfielder should be in contention to play Wednesday, and given the quick turnaround in which he was playing with Peru, it wouldn't be surprising if he's ready to start right away.

Scores winner versus Nashville
Cartagena scored a goal off two shots (one on target) and drew two fouls during Monday's 1-0 win over Nashville.
Impact
Cartagena was an unexpected hero on his playoff debut as he sent a powerful long-range strike into the left top corner for what ended up being the lone goal of the match in the 41st minute. This was just the second goal of the year for the holding midfielder, who will now need to focus on his defensive duties during Game 2 of the series as his team will try to advance to the East semis.
