Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu has undergone knee surgery and will miss the remainder of the season

Undergoes surgery, out for season Tomiyasu underwent successful knee surgery Tuesday and will miss the rest of the season.
Impact This was expected to be the case for Tomiyasu, though Arsenal still haven't revealed the exact knee injury. They're hoping he'll be ready for preseason over the summer, which means it's probably not a bad ACL tear. No matter, it's the end of the season for Tomiyasu, who struggled for fitness most of the campaign and never gained back the starting role he had most of 2021/22. He'll finish with just six league starts (21 appearances) and then five more in Europa League.

Could miss rest of season Tomiyasu may be forced to miss the rest of the season because of injury, according to manager Mikel Arteta. "We've had one assessment , they need to have another assessment tomorro...
Impact It's yet another tough injury for Tomiyasu, who can't seem to stay healthy at Arsenal. Ben White has a firm handle on the right-back job and fortunately, there are no more Europa League matches, so Arteta and the Gunners can focus on winning the league rather than pushing White in every match. Tomiyasu is on just 654 minutes from 21 appearances (six starts) in the current season.

Picks up injury Thursday Tomiyasu was forced off early in Thursday's UEL match against Sporting CP. According to manager Mikel Arteta, "Tomiyasu looks pretty serious, for his reaction straight away and wha...
Impact It's not a great update on Tomiyasu, who has had continual injury issues for the past year. Given this note from Arteta, it's hard to see Tomiyasu being an option Sunday ahead of the international break. The lone good thing for Arsenal is that they no longer have to compete in Europa League, meaning massive depth isn't needed for them with Ben White set to remain at right-back going forward.

Man City beats Arsenal to seize momentum in EPL title race

Manchester City has seized the momentum in the Premier League title race after Jack Grealish and Erling Haaland helped secure a 3-1 win at Arsenal in a top-of-the-table match
FEBRUARY 15, 2023 • Associated Press
Credited with assist Sunday Tomiyasu assisted once to go with three crosses (one accurate) and two chances created in Sunday's 3-2 victory over Manchester United.
Impact Tomiyasu was credited with an assist during Sunday's win, but in all fairness, the goal was 95 percent Bukayo Saka's merit thanks to the long-range shot. Still, this one will go down as Tomiyasu's first assist of the season. He's started in just four of his 15 Premier League appearances, however, so he shouldn't carry a lot of upside going forward.

Impact Tomiyasu continues to return to the Arsenal team after a lingering injury with Japan at the World Cup. The defender didn't make the matchday squad against West Ham but is available for Saturday's trip to Brighton.
DECEMBER 30, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Should be fit Tomiyasu has begun running again ahead of the Dec. 26 Boxing Day match against West Ham, according to manager Mikel Arteta.
Impact Tomiyasu missed some time during Japan's World Cup run due to a lingering injury and has used the rest of the break to work on his fitness. He's worth paying attention to as the league season returns, as otherwise Kieran Tierney and Oleksandr Zinchenko are both on track to be ready in the near future if Tomiyasu isn't.

Available as substitute Tomiyasu (undisclosed) will be an option off the bench for Thursday's matchup with Spain.
Impact Tomiyasu has logged just 45 minutes as a substitute due to lingering injury concerns, so his absence from the starting XI shouldn't come as a surprise. If Japan can advance, it's possible the defender could push for more minutes in the next round.
DECEMBER 1, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Participates in training Tomiyasu participated in Wednesday's training session ahead of Thursday's match agains Spain, Yahoo Sports Japan has reported.
Impact Tomiyasu was left on the bench amidst rotations for Sunday's loss to Costa Rica but has since made his return. He's only played for one half through two games but with qualification on the line, he might start at right-back with Hiroki Sakai (thigh) unlikely to play.
NOVEMBER 30, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Training alone Tomiyasu spent Monday's training session on his own ahead of Thursday's match against Spain, according to Dan Orlowitz of the Japan Times.
Impact Tomiyasu has only played one half through two games as he hasn't fully recovered from an injury. Hiroki Ito or Yuto Nagatomo could take Tomiyasu's spot in the lineup should he remain out by Thursday.
NOVEMBER 29, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Available versus Costa Rica Tomiyasu is on the bench for Sunday's game against Costa Rica.
Impact Tomiyasu continues to deal with a lingering unspecified problem that's keeping him from starting, but he'll have the opportunity to sub in as it happened in the opener. Miki Yamane and Yuto Nagatomo are getting the nod as fullbacks.
NOVEMBER 27, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Questionable for Costa Rica game Tomiyasu didn't practice Thursday and is in doubt for Sunday's game versus Costa Rica, Japao FC reports.
Impact Tomiyasu came off the bench in the opener because he wasn't fully fit and is not 100 percent even though he managed to feature versus Germany. Hiroki Sakai and Yuto Nagatomo manned the defensive flanks in the first game.
NOVEMBER 25, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
On bench Wednesday Tomiyasu (undisclosed) is on the bench for Wednesday's match against Germany.
Impact Tomiyasu isn't fit enough for the starting XI Wednesday, which isn't too surprising as he's been struggling with fitness issues for a couple weeks. It's likely he'll step into the starting XI at some point in group stages with Ko Itakura taking his spot at center-back in the opener.
NOVEMBER 23, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Fit for opener Tomiyasu (undisclosed) told reporters he is fully fit for Thursday's World Cup opener. "I am ready to play...I was injured three weeks ago, but I feel fine now and I am ready."
Impact Tomiyasu has been struggling with an undisclosed issue and missed a Friendly against Canada, but is fit for the World Cup opener. The defender will likely play in central defense against the favored Germans, in what should be a tough match for Japan. Tomiyasu missed the final two matches before the World Cup with a muscular issue.

World Cup 2022 Group E Team Guides: Japan
Won't play in friendly Tomiyasu (undisclosed) won't be available for Wednesday's friendly against Canada, according to manager Hajime Moriyasu via Nikkan Sports.
Impact Tomiyasu missed the last week of games for his club due to a minor injury and evidently won't be risked while the Japanese team prepares for the World Cup. With just one game played for his country in the last year, Tomiyasu may not be in line to start despite strong play when fit. He has also exclusively been used as a center-back in back three when featuring for his national team so look for his name to appear in a different spot than it might at club level. His first game of the World Cup will be Nov. 23 against Germany.

Impact This was expected to be the case for Tomiyasu, who suffered the issue in the Nov. 3 Europa League match. He was on four-straight starts following a full return to fitness and he'll hope to stay healthy during the World Cup. He expects to be a key piece in the Japan squad in what is a difficult group.
