As winners of the 2015 Copa America, Chile will represent South America in the Confederations Cup this summer. La Roja currently sit in fourth place in CONMEBOL qualifying with Argentina breathing down their necks, and their status in next year's World Cup is far from certain.
What are five things you should know about La Roja?
This is their first Confederations Cup
Chile have participated in nine World Cups, but they've never been part of the Confederations Cup. 2015's Copa America win was their first ever, and they backed that up with a win at Copa America Centenario last year.
Their recent form isn't great
Despite still sitting in fourth place in CONMEBOL, Chile's form has fluctuated recently. They've only won three of their last seven matches, including a collapse against Romania in the last friendly before Confederations Cup. Midfielder Arturo Vidal expressed worry about that loss before the tournament, telling AS Chile that "Friendlies are for that, to make mistakes. I just hope we don't repeat those as it left me a little bit worried.
"The important thing is not to make those mistakes in official games."
Eduardo Vargas is a different man in a Chile shirt
Eduardo Vargas' form at the club level has never been spectacular. The diminutive attacker has hit double digit goals just once in his career (during the 2010 season with Universidad de Chile), and he scored just one goal in 12 appearances for Tigres this season after a failed stint at Hoffenheim. At the international level though, he's a whole different person. He goes super saiyan when he pulls on a Chile jersey, and he's hit 33 goals in 69 appearances for La Roja.
They're looking to make it three trophies in three years
Chile have done the double over Argentina in Copa America the last two years, first lifting the trophy on their home soil in 2015, then coming to the United States to beat La Albiceleste in the final once more. They're amongst the favorites to make it a hat trick in three years, and their recent experience will make them even hungrier to do it again and add their third trophy to the cabinet.
They have a ton of experience
There are only two players under the age of 24 in Chile's Confederations Cup squad (22-year-olds Paulo Diaz and Martin Rodriguez). Captain Claudio Bravo is the all-time leader in appearances for La Roja with 112 caps, and three other players are into the triple digits as well. A number of their players ply their trades in Europe, and there's no shortage of experience at the highest level in this team.
