Where To Find Paraguay's Stars After The 2026 FIFA World Cup

Back with Seagulls Gomez is back in team training during preseason with Brighton after the World Cup, according to the club.

Impact Gomez contributed five goals and one assist across 32 Premier League appearances last season, establishing himself as one of the club's most productive central midfielders. His World Cup with Paraguay ended in the loss to France, a match in which he played 71 minutes in a more central role and conceded a penalty, finishing the tournament without a goal or assist. His return to club training now shifts the focus to preseason preparations as he looks to build on a breakout campaign.

Struggles in defeat Gomez had one shot (zero on goal) in Saturday's 1-0 loss against France.

Impact Gomez played 71 minutes in a central midfield spot against France, with his performance marked by a negative impact as he committed a penalty kick before leaving the field. Other than that, he accrued defensive numbers, extending a run of four World Cup matches with multiple tackles. Still, the tournament ended for Paraguay, and he was unable to record a goal or assist. Despite playing as a winger for Brighton during most of the 2025/26 season, Gomez found himself in a more centralized role with his national team, though that position didn't allow him to exploit his offensive qualities.

Back from ban Gomez is no longer suspended and is an option for Paraguay in the round of 16.

Impact Gomez had to serve a suspension in the round of 32 after two yellow cards in the group stage, but will return after Paraguay defeated Germany, set to face either Sweden ot France in the round of 16. This will be a major return for the team, as he started in all three group stage games and should immediately earn back his spot in the midfield, a versatile option. If this is the case, Damian Bobadilla or Matias Galarza will likely return to the bench.

JUNE 29 • ROTOWIRE

Set for one-game suspension Gomez is set for a one-game suspension due to yellow card accumulation.

Impact Gomez is going to miss the round of 32 after Paraguay looks likely to qualify for the round of 32, with the midfielder seeing a yellow in two group stage matches and now suspended for a game. This is a major loss to the team, as he has been a major center of play in the middle of the field, leaving them without a useful midfield option. The good news for the team is that they will have Miguel Almiron available again, who should enter the starting XI again as Matias Galarza covers a central role.

JUNE 25 • ROTOWIRE

Attended to during training Gomez was attended to by trainers during training Wednesday due to a knock ahead of Thursday's match against Australia, according to ABC Deportes.

Impact Gomez went down in training and would need some attention from medical staff after the blow, bringing a bit of worry around the midfielder. This is on the eve of their group stage finale, and as a starter in both group stage matches thus far, he is an important player to the team as they try to qualify for the knockouts. They will then hope for the best results and to have him available, with little further information available at this time. If he were to start from the bench or miss out, Damian Bobadilla is a possible replacement.

Impact Gomez's status will be assessed over the coming days before any further clarity emerges on his availability for Paraguay's upcoming fixtures. The nature of the issue being described as minor is an encouraging early sign for the midfielder's recovery timeline. If he had to miss the clash against Australia on Thursday, Mauricio will likely see a larger role in the front line.

JUNE 20 • ROTOWIRE

Two shots in loss Gomez took two shots (off target), committed one foul, and earned a yellow card in Friday's 4-1 loss to the United States.

Impact Although he was unable to register a goal or assist, Gomez was one of Paraguay's most influential players in possession and showed the competitive edge that has made him a key figure for the national team. Paraguay's midfield was under constant pressure, forcing Gomez to spend significant stretches helping defensively rather than creating chances in the attacking third. He'll look to get more involved going forward in Friday's second group stage match versus Turkiye.

JUNE 14 • ROTOWIRE

Will have key role for Paraguay Gomez will have a prominent role in midfield for Paraguay during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Impact Miguel Almiron and Julio Enciso will be decisive players in the final third for Los Guaranies, but Gomez's intensity and experience in the Premier League will be key in Paraguay's midfield alongside a more defensive-minded player, either Damian Bobadilla or Andres Cubas. Gomez was a regular starter for Brighton in the 2025/26 season, making 26 starts and 32 league appearances while contributing five goals and one assist.

Impact Gomez made a faster-than-expected return from his knee injury, with manager Fabian Hurzeler confirming he would definitely be an option after the playmaker had been targeting the season finale against Manchester United on May 24 as his return date. Brighton opted to ease him back carefully with a bench role rather than throwing him straight into the starting lineup given the type of injury, with his availability ahead of schedule a welcome boost for the final stretch of the campaign. He has started 25 of his 30 Premier League appearances this season, tallying five goals and one assist, and his return strengthens his case for a spot in Paraguay's squad for the 2026 World Cup.
