ImpactShepard was excellent Sunday against the Islanders, stopping 36 of 37 shots in a win. However, the 28-year-old netminder will return to the AHL, indicating Darcy Kuemper (undisclosed) should be ready to go before Washington's next game vs. Vegas. Shepard won both of his two starts with the Capitals this season, allowing five goals on 59 shots.

Semyon Varlamov - Great saves not enoughVarlamov made 24 saves in a 4-1 loss to the Capitals on Saturday. He allowed three goals.

ImpactHe made some incredible saves, including a highlight-reel diving save on Nicolas Aube-Kubel in the second period, but Nick Dowd hammered in the rebound for a 2-1 lead. Varlamov's teammates couldn't solve Hunter Shepard at the other end, despite having a lot of offensive zone time and many good looks. Varly has lost two consecutive games and allowed seven goals in that span after ringing up two shutouts in the previous two games. But Ilya Sorokin is also struggling with a 1-2-3 record and 24 goals allowed in his last six starts. Playing time will likely continue to be distributed as in the past, given that both men as scuffling. But if Varly gets hot, he could get a short-term boost.

ImpactIt was his first start of the season since Oct. 25, and he played lights-out hockey. Shepard made some incredible saves, and his mates laid it on the line for him, too -- they blocked 32 shots compared to just 11 for the Isles. The goal that got past him came in the last minute of the first frame when Shepard got out of position and Alexander Romanov buried the puck into an empty net. Shepard remains third on the Caps' depth chart and will stay with the club until Darcy Kuemper (undisclosed) returns.

Alex Ovechkin - First even-strength goal this yearOvechkin scored two goals in a 4-1 win over the Islanders on Saturday.

ImpactHe opened the scoring at the mid-point of the first. Evgeny Kuznetsov won a draw back to Ovie, who wired it just inside the post under the glove of Semyon Varlamov from the left circle. It was Ovechkin's first even-strength goal this season. He also scored into an empty net. Ovie is the fourth player in Caps' history to have a multigoal game at age 38 years or older. Ovechkin has struggled to score this season -- he has four goals, two of which have gone into the empty net. Still, he has 11 points in 13 games, which leads the Caps.
