Alex Ovechkin - Warming up Sunday
Ovechkin (undisclosed) skated in pregame warmups Sunday and appears to be good to go against the Kings, Bailey Johnson of The Washington Post reports.
Impact
After missing practice Saturday, Ovechkin was considered a game-time call heading into Sunday's matchup against Los Angeles. However, it appears the 38-year-old winger will ultimately be good to go. Ovechkin is currently riding a four-game point streak, posting two goals and three assists in that span. He's up to eight goals and 25 points through 37 games this season.

Darcy Kuemper - Facing Kings
Kuemper will patrol the home crease Sunday against the Kings, according to Tarik El-Bashir of Monumental Sports Network.
Impact
Kuemper has gone 1-3-0 in his past four outings, surrendering 18 goals on 128 shots during that span. In 20 games this season, he has posted a 9-9-2 record with a 3.25 GAA and an .891 save percentage. LA is tied for ninth in the league this campaign with 3.37 goals per contest.

Rasmus Sandin - Won't play Sunday
Sandin (illness) didn't practice Saturday and will miss Sunday's game versus the Kings, Bailey Johnson of The Washington Post reports.
Impact
Sandin will miss a second game with an illness after he sat out Friday in a loss to the Hurricanes. The 23-year-old blueliner has 11 assists and a minus-8 rating through 36 games this season. Ethan Bear will likely continue to work on the second defensive pairing and power-play unit while Sandin is sidelined.

Alex Ovechkin - Game-time decision Sunday
Coach Spencer Carbury said Saturday that Ovechkin (undisclosed) will be a game-time decision versus LA on Sunday, Bailey Johnson of The Washington Post reports.
Impact
Ovechkin sat out practice Saturday in what originally was called a maintenance day. Ovechkin appeared to get hurt in the third period Friday when he got tangled up with Carolina's Jordan Staal. Ovechkin has only seven goals and 25 points in 37 games, averaging only .68 points per game. That is way down from his previous career low of .83 per contest, set in the 2011-12 season. Stay tuned close to puck drop Sunday to see Ovechkin's availability.

Alex Ovechkin - Taking maintenance day
Ovechkin was held out of Saturday's practice for maintenance reasons, Tarik El-Bashir of Monumental Sports Network reports.
Impact
Ovechkin appeared to get tangled up with Hurricanes center Jordan Staal late in the third period of Friday's 6-2 loss and so the Capitals are giving their captain some extra time to rest up. The 38-year-old is having a down year by his lofty standards with just seven goals and 25 points in 37 games, but Ovechkin is riding a four-game point streak and has notched eight points in his last nine games so some positive regression should be in store as long as he can stay healthy.

Darcy Kuemper - Crumbles against Carolina
Kuemper stopped 28 of 33 shots in Friday's 6-2 loss to the Hurricanes.
Impact
Carolina also potted an empty-net goal. Kuemper got spotted a 2-0 lead, but he was besieged after the first intermission as Washington got out-shot 24-11 over the final two frames, and two of the pucks that beat him in the third period came on power plays. The veteran has coughed up five goals in three of his last four starts, and since the beginning of December he's stumbled to a 4-5-0 record in nine outings with a 3.54 GAA and .890 save percentage. Charlie Lindgren (upper body) may not be sidelined too much longer, and Kuemper could have trouble even sticking in a timeshare once his goaltending partner returns from IR.

Nic Dowd - Opens scoring in loss
Dowd scored to go along with three blocked shots in Friday's 6-2 loss to the Hurricanes.
Impact
Dowd has elevated his offensive game of late. He delivered assists in a pair of games last week. and his tally Friday was all that the Capitals could afford at even strength. Dowd remains a fine utility player and penalty-killing specialist with five goals, three assists and a plus-4 rating through 28 games, but the vast majority of fantasy managers will pass on the 33-year-old due to his fourth-line role.

John Carlson - Earns milestone helper in loss
Carlson used the power play to record career assist No. 500 in Friday's 6-2 loss to the Hurricanes.
Impact
As he's done plenty of times in his career, Carlson set the stage for a textbook play that resulted in him dishing to Alex Ovechkin, who then fed Dylan Strome for a tip-in goal at the doorstep. Unfortunately for the Caps, they'd squander a 2-0 lead after the first period and permit six unanswered tallies to lose a tough divisional tilt at home. Carlson has two goals and 19 assists -- including nine points on the power play -- through 37 games.

Nicolas Aube-Kubel - Manages helper in loss
Aube-Kubel registered an assist in Friday's 6-2 loss to the Hurricanes.
Impact
The Capitals aren't asking much of Aube-Kubel in his fourth-line role, but he's been an efficient producer given the scant role, adding three goals, five assists and a plus-6 rating through 25 games. Aube-Kubel is set to become an unrestricted free agent in the summer.

Coach Spencer Carbery told Bailey Johnson of The Washington Post, that Oshie has returned to Minnesota to undergo treatment for an upper-body injury.

Kuemper was the first goaltender off the ice at morning practice and will defend the home crease versus Carolina on Friday, Tarik El-Bashir of Monumental Sports Network reports.
Impact
Kuemper snapped a two-game losing streak Tuesday, turning aside 32 shots in a 4-3 win over Pittsburgh. The victory gives Kuemper a 9-8-2 record with a 3.15 GAA and an .893 save percentage this season. Rasmus Sandin - Doubtful Friday
Sandin (illness) was not at practice Friday, per Bailey Johnson of The Washington Post.
Impact
Sandin's spot at practice was taken by Ethan Bear, who also replaced him on the second power play. Sandin exploded offensively for the Capitals last season after his trade from Toronto, scoring three times and adding 12 assists in 19 games. He has not had the same offensive luck this season, picking up 11 assists in 36 games.
