Monday Morning Leafs Report: Auston Matthews' MVP case, a choice in goal and a radical ideaIf Matthews can keep scoring like this, he’ll merit serious consideration for his second Hart Trophy.

Jake McCabe - Deposits goal in winMcCabe scored an empty-net goal on his only shot in Sunday's 3-1 win over the Kraken.
ImpactNearing the end of the third period, McCabe risked icing the puck when he shot the biscuit 180 feet down the ice with Seattle hosting an empty net in their end. He ended up hitting the center of the net to put the game away for the Maple Leafs. McCabe also got into a tilt with Brandon Tanev in the first period that put him in the penalty box for five minutes. With the empty-net goal, the 30-year old has already tied the most goals in his career with four and with 17 total points on the year he looks to surpass the most points he's had in a season when he gained 22 in Chicago in 2021-22.

Jordan Eberle - Supplies goal in lossEberle scored a goal on his only shot in Sunday's 3-1 loss to the Maple Leafs.
ImpactLate in the second period, Eberle deked Ilya Samsonov from in close to cut the lead to 2-1 on assists from Tomas Tatar and Jared McCann. He finished the game with an even rating in 16:28 TOI. Eberle is on a nice three-game point streak, scoring four points (two goals and two assists) with five shots on goal. He has scored back-to-back 20 goal seasons for the Kraken but is on pace to be short of that mark for the current frame. Seattle hosts the Blackhawks on Wednesday night.

Auston Matthews - Four-game point streakMatthews lit the lamp in Sunday's 3-1 win over the Ducks.
ImpactMatthews snuck in front of the net from the left-side wall and received a pass from Mitchell Marner that he snuck past Joey Daccord on the backhand for his 38th goal of the year. It opened the scoring for the Maple Leafs and Nicholas Robertson was able to provide the game winner in the second period for Toronto's 23rd win of the season. Matthews fired a total of five shots on net and had a plus-2 rating in 21:51 TOI. He is averaging two points a game during his four-game point streak (five goals and three assists) with 19 shots on net.

Ilya Samsonov - Holds on for winSamsonov made 16 saves in a 3-1 win over Anaheim on Sunday.
ImpactThis was Samsonov's second game since being called up from the AHL on Jan. 10. He was not overly busy on the night, facing a total of 17 shots from the Kraken. He allowed only one goal on a Jordan Eberle deke from in close to cut the lead to 2-1 for the Maple Leafs. With just over six minutes left, he made a brilliant save by sliding across the crease and robbing Justin Schultz who was all alone at the side of the net. It still remains to be seen if Samsonov or Martin Jones remains with the team when number-one netminder Joseph Woll (ankle) returns from injury.
