Maple Leafs Coach Craig Berube Defends Star Player Following OT Loss vs. Bruins Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube has stuck up for one of his star players following Saturday’s loss.

Morgan Rielly - Sweet goal in game 800 Rielly picked up a goal Saturday in a 4-3 overtime loss to Boston. The goal came in his 800th career game.
Impact Rielly now has points in back-to-back games (one goal, one assist) and four points (two goals, two assists) in nine games. But the Leafs power play continues to struggle, and Rielly has no points with the extra man. Then again, neither does Oliver Ekman-Larson, his main competition for power-play time. Be patient. He's had three 50-plus point seasons, so his game will balance out.

Anthony Stolarz - Strong play not enough Stolarz made 30 saves Saturday in a 4-3 overtime loss to Boston.
Impact Stolarz played a strong game -- he made a miraculous save in OT that saved the game... until Brad Marchand stuffed the winner past him. Overall, Stolarz is 3-2-1 with 2.19 GAA and .927 save percentage. Those are elite numbers for the former back-up turned platoon leader. Watch for him to alternate starts with Joseph Woll. Stolarz is a great fantasy play when he's in the Leafs' net.

Mitch Marner - Three assists not enough Marner put up three assists Saturday in a 4-3 overtime loss to the Bruins.
Impact Marner leads the Maple Leafs with 10 points, including nine assists, in nine games. But his minus-3 rating is an odd outlier. Marner has been a Selke-worthy forward for years, with a combined plus-83 over the last four seasons. Maybe it's simply an adjustment to his new coach Craig Berube. We expect things to rebalance, but Marner might underperform a little short term while he figures it out.

Auston Matthews - Seven points in last six games Matthews scored a goal and added an assist in a 4-3 overtime loss to the Bruins on Saturday.
Impact Matthews tied the game at 18:43 of the third when he redirected Mitch Marner's pass from the right point. But in his exhaustion in the extra frame, he sent a pass off the boards that was easily intercepted by David Pastrnak and turned into the game winner. Matthews got off to a slow start this season, but he has seven points, including four goals, in his last six games. He's been seriously unlucky -- his 9.5 shooting percentage is well below his 16.1 career average and almost half his 18.7 from last season. Matthews will go on a rip soon, as his 42 shots put him on pace for close to 400 shots this season.
