Impact Vanecek will make his fourth straight start despite allowing 11 goals on 107 shots over his previous three outings. His last appearance against the Hurricanes was a relief outing in which he stopped all 11 shots he faced. For now, it appears Vanecek has reclaimed the No. 1 job over Nico Daws, but it's a tenuous grip for the veteran netminder.

Impact Smith was injured in the first period in Boston on Jan. 15 and has missed the last eight games. The good news is that coach Lindy Ruff said Smith is day-to-day. Smith could return to the lineup as early as Monday when the Devils host Seattle.

Impact Hischier has three multi-point games in a row despite failing to pick up a point on the power play during that stretch. The 25-year-old center missed nearly a month of action (11 games) earlier in the season but has been rolling since with 12 goals and 18 helpers in his last 31 contests.

Impact Bratt is riding a six-game point streak during which he has notched four goals and five assists, all at even strength. Vitek Vanecek - Third straight start Vanecek made 25 saves Thursday in a 5-3 loss to the Flames.
Impact It was his third straight start (1-2-0), and he has allowed 11 goals in that span. The Devils were good in the first, bad in the second and then chasing the Flames in the third. Vanecek wasn't awful, but he doesn't seem to have the ability to steal games. And his 3.26 GAA and .887 save percentage don't inspire confidence. The Devils could make a move for goalie by the deadline and that would likely chase Vanecek to the bench. Don't count on him if he Devils somehow start to push for the postseason.

Jack Hughes - Timing off but great to be back Hughes (upper body) had four shots and finished minus-3 in a 5-3 loss to Calgary on Thursday.
Impact He played 20:24 after missing 11 games with an upper-body injury. Hughes had a lot of energy, but some of his reads and responsibilities were off. That will come (and fast). Hughes has 45 points (15 goals) in 33 games this season and will compete for second-half MVP if he stays healthy.

Impact His first opened the scoring. It was a one-timer from the left face-off circle off a 2-on-1. His second was a deflection at the left point at 13:46 of the third to cut the score to 4-3. Palat is riding a three-game, five-point streak that includes three goals. His overall pace this season is average this season, but a streak is a streak. And you need to roll guys like him on and off your roster in order to win.
