Headed for West Coast
Kesselring was traded to the Sharks on Wednesday along with the 27th overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft in exchange for the 20th overall pick.
Impact
Kesselring was not going to get much in the way of ice time with the Sabres next year, given the logjam on the blue line. In San Jose, the 26-year-old defenseman should get the chance to force his way into a third-pairing role, especially if veterans Nick Leddy and John Klingberg are allowed to walk in free agency.

Garners assist in high-scoring win
Kesselring notched an assist and seven PIM in Sunday's 8-7 win over the Lightning.
Impact
Kesselring ended an 11-game point drought in the process. The 26-year-old defenseman is currently in a third-pairing role, though he could lose some playing time if the Sabres opt to give Luke Schenn a run in that spot. Through 31 outings, Kesselring has just two assists, 41 shots on net, 38 blocked shots, 22 hits and 50 PIM in his first year with the Sabres, which has been disrupted by multiple injury absences.

Nabs helper Saturday
Kesselring logged an assist, three blocked shots and two PIM in Saturday's 5-0 win over the Islanders.
Impact
Kesselring has been working back to full strength after an ankle injury has cost him most of January. That's his third lengthy absence of the season. Combined with the depth of the Sabres' blue line, Kesselring has mostly worked in a third-pairing role, picking up one assist, 26 shots on net, 27 blocked shots, 16 hits and 23 PIM over 19 outings.

Suiting up Thursday
Kesselring (ankle) is available for Thursday's game in Montreal, according to Heather Engel of NHL.com.
Impact
Kesselring has played in just one of Buffalo's last 10 games, but he'll return to the lineup after being deemed a game-time call earlier Thursday. The right-shot blueliner is slated to skate on the third pairing beside Jacob Bryson in Montreal. Zach Metsa will be a healthy scratch as a result of Kesselring suiting up.

Game-time call Thursday
Kesselring (ankle) will be a game-time decision in Montreal on Thursday, Heather Engel of NHL.com reports.
Impact
Kesselring has missed the last two games after tweaking his ankle against the Wild on Jan. 17. The 26-year-old defenseman has yet to acquire a point in 17 games this season, though he was an offensive threat in 2024-25 with seven goals an 22 assists in 82 regular-season games. Should Kesselring not be available, Zach Metsa will remain in the lineup.

Game-time call
Kesselring (ankle) will be a game-time decision against Nashville on Tuesday, Paul Hamilton of WGR Sports Radio 550 reports.
Impact
Kesselring sat out Monday's 2-1 loss to Carolina after tweaking his ankle injury. However, he could return to the lineup versus the Predators. He hasn't earned a point in 17 appearances this season while providing 23 shots on goal, 23 blocked shots and 16 hits.

Won't play Wednesday
Kesselring (ankle) won't play in Wednesday's game against Philadelphia, Bill Hoppe of the Olean Times Herald reports.
Impact
Head coach Lindy Ruff said after Wednesday's morning skate that Kesselring is available, but the defenseman will remain sidelined for at least one more matchup. It seems possible that Kesselring will be able to return to action for Thursday's game against Montreal, but the Sabres will presumably monitor his status ahead of puck drop before determining his status against the Canadiens.
