Needed in relief Sunday Lindgren stopped 16 of 18 shots after replacing Darcy Kuemper midway through the second period of Sunday's 7-4 loss to the Sabres.

Impact He was only marginally more effective than Kuemper was, as the Capitals' defense was the real culprit in the poor afternoon showing. Lindgren only saw action in three games in February and didn't pick up a win, and on the season he has a 2.74 GAA and .905 save percentage through 26 appearances.

Shaky in Thursday's loss Lindgren stopped 17 of 20 shots in Thursday's 4-2 loss to the Ducks.

Impact Anaheim's final goal was scored into an empty net. Lindgren had little chance on the Ducks' first tally, which came on a breakaway after the Capitals defense fell asleep midway through the second period, but the netminder would probably like to have the next two back. Lindgren hasn't seen a lot of work lately behind a healthy Darcy Kuemper, and his recent performance hasn't warranted more action -- over seven appearances since the beginning of January, Lindgren has a 3.12 GAA and an .875 save percentage.

Impact With Darcy Kuemper struggling in recent outings, Lindgren gets the start in what has become a crucial game against Anaheim as Washington tries desperately to reclaim lost ground in the Eastern Conference playoff race. The 29-year-old Lindgren has allowed three or more goals in each of his last four starts and the Capitals have not been able to provide consistent offense for their netminders in recent weeks, so there is some risk attached to starting him, though a possible return of Alex Ovechkin (personal) would certainly help Washington's chances.
