Impact Romanov's placement on injured reserve shouldn't come as a surprise, considering the defenseman is not expected back until mid-April at the earliest. With Matias Maccelli (lower body) and Calum Ritchie (lower body) both dealing with injuries, the Isles used the open roster spot from Romanov's IR placement to bring up Mitchell Chaffee.

Has torn ACL Romanov will miss the next six-to-eight months and undergo surgery to repair a torn ACL in his right knee, the team announced Wednesday.

Impact Romanov's timetable doesn't completely rule him out for the remainder of the 2026-27 campaign, but even in a best-case scenario, he would be returning for only the Islanders' final few games. He has no points, a plus-2 rating, three shots, five hits and seven blocks in three outings this year. Romanov's long-term absence creates an opportunity for Scott Mayfield or Matt Kessel to play far more often this campaign than they might have otherwise.

Departs Tuesday's game Romanov (undisclosed) was hurt Tuesday versus the Rangers and is undergoing further evaluation, Stefen Rosner of NHL.com reports.

Impact Romanov left the contest during the third period and was unable to return. Head coach Pete DeBoer indicated the Islanders will know more Wednesday. If Romanov isn't able to play Thursday versus the Blackhawks, Matt Kessel or Scott Mayfield will check into the lineup.

Good to go for 2026-27 Romanov has recovered from shoulder surgery and will be ready for training camp in September, according to Jon Lane of NHL.com.

Impact Romanov played in just 15 games in his fourth year with the Islanders in 2025-26, missing a large portion of the season after being hit from behind by Mikko Rantanen during a game in Dallas in November. The 26-year-old Romanov practiced with contact toward the end of last season, so he should have no restrictions for the start of the 2026-27 campaign. The 2018 second-round pick will slot in on one of the bottom two pairings, rounding out the left side of the Islanders' blue line with Adam Pelech, behind unquestioned No. 1 defenseman Matthew Schaefer. Romanov will likely also receive work with the penalty kill this coming season.
