Colts: Here’s how Mo Alie-Cox can benefit with returns of Jack Doyle and Trey Burton
Decreased reps for Colts TE Mo Alie-Cox isn't necessarily a bad thing for him. Indianapolis Colts starting tight end Jack Doyle is questiona...

Heading to injured reserve
The Colts placed Burton (calf) on injured reserve Monday.
Impact
Burton sustained a calf injury on Aug. 29, after which coach Frank Reich said it's an issue that takes "generally more than two weeks" to recover. Now more than a week in the future, Burton will be given the rest of the month to get healthy before the Colts can consider activating him from IR. While he won't suit up until Oct. 4 at Chicago at the earliest, Jack Doyle (neck), Mo Alie-Cox and Noah Togiai compose the team's options at tight end in the meantime.

Could land on IR
Head coach Frank Reich may place Burton (calf) on injured reserve to begin the year, Andrew Walker of the Colts' official site reports.
Impact
The Colts don't expect Burton to play in the first couple of games this year, and with the new IR rules, he could be placed on IR and return after just three weeks. That may be the most practical outcome for the team's roster construction, as it claimed Noah Togiai off waivers to add depth to its tight-end room that now has four occupants. Burton will continue to be evaluated in the upcoming days before the Colts make a final decision, but he's not expected to play in the season opener versus Jacksonville at the very least.

Expected to miss time
Burton is expected to miss at least the first couple of games of the coming season, Mike Chappell of Fox 59 News Indianapolis reports.
Impact
With Burton not in the mix to start the season, added targets will be available for Jack Doyle, as well as Mo Alie-Cox and Xavier Grimble to a lesser degree. At this point, Week 3's matchup against the Jets seems to be the soonest we'll see Burton suit up for a game with the Colts.

Could miss some time
Burton is still being evaluated, but it sounds like he's probably going to miss some time due to the calf injury he suffered during Saturday's scrimmage, Andrew Walker of the Colt...
Impact
With that in mind, coach Frank Reich noted Monday that calf injuries typically "can range in a number of weeks," adding that the team is "still kind of waiting on it to settle down for a day or two to really get a better gauge to how long it may be" for the tight end. Reich went on to say "I can tell you those types of things are generally more than two weeks if you get it and get it good, but we will just have to see how it settles down here over the next couple of days." The bottom line here is that unless Burton's calf issue improves quicker than most, his Week 1 status is uncertain. On the plus side, the Colts welcomed fellow tight end Jack Doyle (neck) back to practice Monday.

Set for MRI
Burton will undergo a MRI after suffering a calf injury in Saturday's practice, Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan Indianapolis reports.
Impact
Coach Frank Reich seemed to think the injury would only require "a little bit of time" to heal, which seems somewhat sketchy considering Burton is still slated for a MRI, but for now the injury is being classified as a calf strain. Jack Doyle has been participating in practice off and on over the past few weeks due to a neck injury, so the Colts are perilously thin when it comes to quality depth at the TE position.

Suffers injury Saturday
Burton was removed from Saturday's practice after suffering a lower-body injury, Stephen Holder of The Athletic reports.
Impact
The team has yet to reveal what type of injury Burton might have suffered, but he was unable to put any weight on his leg and was helped off the field. The Colts were already without Jack Doyle (neck), who has been missing practices sporadically with a neck injury, leaving just unproven names such as Mo Alie-Cox, Xavier Grimble and Andrew Vollert to shoulder most of the starting TE reps.

Expecting part-time role
Burton acknowledged Tuesday that he'll likely play fewer snaps for the Colts than he did during his two seasons with the Bears, Joel A. Erickson of The Indianapolis Star reports.
Impact
Coach Frank Reich and offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni expect Burton to be a significant part of their offense, with the 28-year-old perhaps replacing Jack Doyle in obvious passing situations. Burton handled an 80 percent snap share in 2018 for the Bears before dropping to 57 percent during his injury-plagued 2019 campaign, eventually undergoing hip labrum surgery in December. Burton was held out of Tuesday's practice for maintenance reasons, but since there hasn't been any reports of a setback with his hip, he appears on track for a limited role Week 1 at Jacksonville.

Impact
Reich, who previously worked with Burton in 2016 and 2017 while both were part of the Eagles organization, referred to the tight end as a "really important piece to this equation," while Sirianni said "a lot of things are going to be good in this offense because of Trey Burton." Reich also mentioned Eric Ebron's old role, albeit with an acknowledgment that the job might look different with Burton filling it. The 28-year-old joined Indianapolis on a one-year contract that doesn't include much in the way of guarantees, hoping to rebound from hip surgery and revive his career after a lost 2019 season. Burton was on track to finish his rehab process in June or July, but it isn't clear if he'll be a full participant when the Colts begin padded practices.
