INJURIES

Limited in return to practice Fant (ankle) was a limited participant in Wednesday's practice, Zac Stevens of TheDNVR.com reports.
Impact Fant wasn't able to practice in any capacity last week, so handling restricted reps Wednesday represents a significant step in the right direction. Coach Vic Fangio initially labeled Fant as week-to-week due to the ankle injury he sustained Oct. 1, so it's possible that the tight end could have to upgrade to full practice by Friday in order to play Sunday against the Patriots.

Practicing Wednesday Fant (ankle) will participate in Wednesday's practice, Mike Klis of 9News Denver reports.
Impact The extent of Fant's practice activity remains to be seen, but it's encouraging to see him get on the field in some capacity after having been absent all last week. The tight end is working to overcome the ankle sprain in time for Sunday's game in New England.
OCTOBER 14, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Unsurprisingly ruled out Fant (ankle) was ruled out ahead of Monday's contest against the Patriots, Mike Klis of 9News Denver reports.
Impact This comes as little surprise considering Fant has been unable to practice all week. Coach Vic Fangio previously stated the second-year tight end is likely week-to-week after injuring his ankle in last Thursday's win over the Jets, although that timeline wasn't supposed to kickstart until Week 6, when the Broncos take on the Dolphins.

Making progress Fant (ankle) did not practice Thursday but did get in some work on the side, Troy Renck of Denver 7 News reports.
Impact Fant isn't expected to face the Patriots in Week 5, but it looks like he's recovering at a good pace after having been force out of last Thursday's win over the Jets due to an ankle sprain. If the second-year tight end indeed sits out versus New England, his next chance to take the field will come Oct. 18 against the Dolphins.

Trending in wrong direction Coach Vic Fangio said Wednesday that Fant (ankle) is a "long shot" to suit up in New England on Sunday, Aric DiLalla of the Broncos' official site reports.
Impact Fangio noted that Fant hasn't yet been officially ruled out for Week 5, but it looks as though the starting tight end would have to make exceedingly quick progress in practice for any chance at suiting up. Adam Schefter of ESPN previously reported that the second-year tight end will be considered week-to-week going forward. Rookie fourth-round pick Albert Okwuegbunam hasn't yet been active this season, but he could get a shot to make his NFL debut versus the Patriots if Fant is indeed unable to go.

Likely not playing Week 5 Fant is not expected to play next week against the Patriots, but is considered "week-to-week" in subsequent games, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Impact If there's a bit of a silver lining for Fant it's that he doesn't appear to have suffered a season-ending ankle injury during Thursday's win over the Jets. An elongated absence is hardly a consolation prize considering the Broncos are practically devoid of healthy pass catchers with Courtland Sutton (knee) on IR and Jerry Jeudy banged up entering Thursday's matchup. Albert Okwuegbunam makes for an intriguing speculative add in deep leagues considering his speed (4.49 40-yard dash), but it's worth reiterating the rookie was a healthy inactive Thursday with Jake Butt and Nick Vannett both ahead of him on the depth chart despite the obvious difference in athletic talent.

Fangio: Rypien to start against Patriots if Lock isn't ready

Denver Broncos coach Vic Fangio says Brett Rypien will get his second straight start next week if Drew Lock isn't ready to return from an injury to his throwing shoulder

Injury Report: Noah Fant, KJ Hamler ‘iffy’ to play in Week 5, could miss multiple weeks Cornerback A.J. Bouye, who was injured in Week 1, may also miss the team’s game against the Patriots.
OCTOBER 2, 2020 • DENVERBRONCOS.COM
Could miss time Coach Vic Fangio said Friday that Fant (ankle) doesn't have a season-ending injury, but "there's a chance he will miss some time," Troy Renck of Denver7 reports.
Impact Fant was carted off during Thursday's win over the Jets, and the team is running tests to determine how long the second-year tight end will be out. It's a positive sign that he avoided a season-ending injury considering how well he's played this season with a 19-219-2 line through four games. However, the Broncos are already without wideout Courtland Sutton (torn ACL) for the rest of the season and may need to lean on rookies Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler even more moving forward. Jake Butt, Nick Vannett and possibly rookie Albert Okwuegbunam could see additional snaps during Fant's absence.

Ankle injury downplayed Fant sustained a "minor" ankle injury during Thursday's win over the Jets, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Impact Fant avoiding a serious injury is a piece of much-needed good news for a Denver team that's already lost numerous star players for multiple weeks, and some for the season. The starting tight end was carted off the field in the second half of Thursday's win, and he was quickly ruled out to return after being examined in the locker room. Fant will now get the benefit of an extra three days of rest before the Broncos head to New England in Week 5.
OCTOBER 2, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Won't return Thursday Fant (ankle) is ruled out to return to Thursday's game against the Jets, Troy Renck of Denver 7 News reports.
Impact Fant was carted off the field in the third quarter and immediately taken to the locker room for examination. In addition to the loss of Fant, Denver's offense is now without all of Drew Lock (shoulder), KJ Hamler (hamstring) and Phillip Lindsay (toe) for the remainder of Thursday's contest, with Courtland Sutton (knee - ACL) also already having been lost for the year. The second-year tight end's first chance to retake the field will come Oct. 11 at New England.
OCTOBER 2, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Carted off field Thursday Fant is questionable to return to Thursday's game against the Jets due to an ankle injury, Zac Stevens of TheDNVR.com reports.
Impact Fant had to be carted off the field in the third quarter after taking a blow to the lower leg. Rookie second-round pick KJ Hamler (hamstring) has also been ruled out to return Thursday, and the Broncos are already without top wideout Courtland Sutton (knee - ACL) for the year. Fant secured five of six targets for 35 yards before exiting Thursday's game.

Jets QB Darnold leaves game after hard sack, then returns

OCTOBER 2, 2020 • Associated Press
Top target in loss to Bucs Fant hauled in five of a team-high 10 targets for 46 receiving yards during Sunday's 28-10 loss to Tampa Bay.
Impact Though his two-game scoring streak was snapped by the Buccaneers, the second-year tight end tied a career high with his 10 targets. This was certainly not an ideal matchup for Fant, as Tampa Bay entered Sunday holding the longest active streak of games without a TE touchdown allowed (dating back to Week 12 of last year). An upcoming Thursday night matchup against the Jets may help get Fant back in the end zone; New York has already surrendered three receiving TDs to opposing TEs.

Registers another TD Week 2 Fant corralled four of five targets for 57 receiving yards and a touchdown during Sunday's 26-21 loss to the Steelers.
Impact The second-year tight end was a handful for the Steelers defense, with three of his receptions going for 14-plus yards on the afternoon. The second of those plays was a 20-yard TD catch off of the arm of backup Jeff Driskel, and Fant immediately followed it up with a catch on the two-point conversion to get Denver within three points of Pittsburgh for the time being. After a disappointing conclusion to 2019 in which he only picked up four or more receptions once over his final six appearances, Fant is red-hot to kick off 2020. He now draws a matchup against a Buccaneers defense that hasn't allowed a tight end touchdown since Week 11 of last season (tied for the longest active streak in the NFL).
