Impact The rookie fifth-round pick is still working behind Miles Sanders and Boston Scott but at least mixes in with the starters from time to time. If nothing else, Gainwell appears on track for a roster spot, especially after the Eagles waived Kerryon Johnson (knee) earlier this week. Gainwell had two carries for 14 yards and two catches for 16 yards in Philly's preseason opener, and he should see more work this Thursday against New England. He, Jordan Howard, Jason Huntley and Elijah Holyfield are competing for what likely will be two spots behind presumed locks Sanders and Scott.

Four touches in preseason Week 1 Gainwell rushed twice for 14 yards and caught two of four targets for 16 yards in Thursday's 24-16 loss to Pittsburgh.

Impact Gainwell got some looks as both a rusher and a receiver, and that type of usage should remain a common theme throughout the preseason for the rookie fifth-round pick. With excellent hands and the ability to make people miss in space, Gainwell profiles as a change-of-pace running back and gadget guy. He could be a weapon on third down if he proves adept enough at pass blocking to be trusted with such a role. Gainwell should see more action in Week 2 of preseason against New England.

Also in the mix for slotting on the Eagles' RB depth chart are veterans Jordan Howard and Kerryon Johnson, but Gainwell -- who's listed at 5-foot-9, 200 pounds -- is a player to track leading up to Week 1, as he has an opportunity to claim a portion of the team's passing-down work in his first season as a pro.
