Impact Ross couldn't replicate last year's Week 1 magic, and this was his lowest yardage total in a single game since 2018. Rookie QB Joe Burrow spread the ball around Sunday, targeting five players five or more times, so it's encouraging that Ross is at least in the mix to begin the season. He'll look to capitalize on those opportunities in Thursday's matchup against the Browns.

Impact Ross suffered an arm injury in training camp roughly two weeks ago, but he's managed to shed the issue in time to begin the regular season at full health. The 2017 first-round pick is listed wideout behind A.J. Green and Tyler Boyd on Cincinnati's first unofficial depth chart, per Ben Baby of ESPN.com. As such, Ross is seemingly in line to serve as Cincinnati's No. 3 receiver during Sunday's season opener against the Chargers, though Tee Higgins, Auden Tate and Alex Erickson all offer competition for targets.

Impact Though Ross has missed time in camp after being placed on the reserve/COVID-19 injured list in August before picking up an arm injury just under two weeks ago, the Bengals still seemingly favor him for the No. 3 role over rookie second-round pick Tee Higgins and holdovers Auden Tate and Alex Erickson. The Bengals' other starting wideouts, A.J. Green and Tyler Boyd, along with running backs Joe MIxon and Giovani Bernard are still expected to draw the bulk of the targets from quarterback Joe Burrow, but Ross' high-end speed should at least allow him to divert some of the attention away from Cincinnati's top weapons in the passing game. Ross will still have to prove he can stay on the field, however; he's played 24 of a possible 48 games through his first three NFL seasons.

Impact Ross warmed up for Sunday's scrimmage and dressed as if he intended to play, but he was ultimately restricted to the sideline. It's reassuring that the speedster's absence wasn't an indication that he'd aggravated his arm injury. With just two weeks remaining until the season opener Sept. 13 versus the Chargers, the Bengals appear to be simply taking a cautious approach to Ross' health.

Impact Ross was pointing in this direction with his work on the side earlier this week. This weekend is traditionally the "dress rehearsal" preseason game, i.e. the third preseason game, so this scrimmage carries a little extra weight for someone like Ross, who has something to prove to earn playing time.
