John Harbaugh: 'We'll See' If J.K. Dobbins Plays Week 1

May not be ready for Week 1
Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said Wednesday that it's too early to know if Dobbins (knee) will play Week 1, Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic reports.
Impact
Harbaugh's unwillingness to commit to Dobbins' availability for the start of the season isn't overly surprising, though it shouldn't necessarily be taken as a sign that the running back is trending in the wrong direction as Week 1 approaches. The coach still acknowledged that Dobbins is making good progress, albeit with significant hurdles remaining in his recovery from the ACL tear he suffered last August, including a return to contact work in practice. A preseason appearance seems highly unlikely for the 23-year-old, who has thus far been limited to individual work since he was activated from the PUP list earlier this month.

Taking baby steps in practice
Dobbins (knee) lined up and ran plays during Monday's practice, albeit without defenders on the field, Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com reports.
Impact
It's progress from his recent participation in individual drills, moving Dobbins a step forward to an actual 11-on-11 practice. He was activated from the PUP list last Monday (Aug. 8) and isn't likely to play in the preseason, but a return for Week 1 seems tentatively on track. Ravens coach John Harbaugh thought Dobbins looked better Monday than he did last week, per Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic.

Going through individual drills
Dobbins (knee) didn't practice over the weekend but is back on the field for individual drills Monday, Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com reports.
Impact
While he still hasn't progressed to full-team work, Dobbins at least seems to be avoiding setbacks so far. An appearance this preseason might be asking too much, but he at least has a shot to be ready Week 1. The Ravens don't have much else behind him, with Mike Davis the favorite for the No. 2 role in the increasingly likely event Gus Edwards (knee) isn't ready for the season opener. Dobbins and Edwards both suffered ACL tears before Week 1 last year.

Starts with indiviidual drills
Dobbins (knee) did individual drills Monday at his 2022 practice debut, staying on the field for nearly 90 minutes, Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic reports.
Impact
Dobbins had been pressuring the team to remove him from the PUP list since the start of training camp and finally got his wish Monday afternoon. "I thought he looked pretty good in individual (drills)," Ravens coach John Harbaugh said afterward. "You guys saw him moving around, running the ballhandling drill. That will be the first step. Maybe we add a little bit more every day and kind of see how he handles it, and see how the knee responds. But it seems like it's so far so good." With nearly five weeks to go before Baltimore's regular-season opener, Dobbins seemingly has put himself on the right track to play, while backfield mate Gus Edwards (also coming back from an ACL tear) remains on the PUP list and is trending the other direction.

Activated from PUP list
Dobbins (knee) has passed his physical and has been removed from the active/PUP list, Ryan Mink of the Ravens' official site reports.
Impact
Per the report, Dobbins, who suffered a season-ending knee injury last year on Aug. 28, figures to be eased into action by the Ravens, likely starting with individual drills. When he's 100 percent, Dobbins profiles as the team's lead back, while Gus Edwards is a candidate to be next in line for backfield touches when he returns from a knee injury of his own. In the meantime, Mike Davis, Justice Hill, Corey Clement, Tyler Badie and Nate McCrary also are on hand to compete for depth chart slotting.

Set to undergo evaluation Monday
Dobbins (knee) will undergo an evaluation Monday to determine if he can be activated from the active/PUP list, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Impact
As Jonas Shaffer of The Baltimore Sun previously reported, Dobbins has been in a hurry to resume practicing but has remained on the PUP list through the first two weeks of training camp. However, he could return as soon as Monday if his checkup goes as planned. Dobbins still profiles as the Ravens' lead running back once he's ready with Mike Davis, Justice Hill and Corey Clement currently the top healthy options and Gus Edwards (knee) still behind on his rehab. Dobbins, a 2020 second-round pick, ran 134 times for 805 yards (6.0 yards per carry) and nine touchdowns as a rookie and was set for an expanded role last year before tearing his ACL during a preseason contest.

Eager to practice, still on PUP
Coach John Harbaugh relayed Thursday that Dobbins (knee) remains in a hurry to resume practicing, Jonas Shaffer of The Baltimore Sun reports.
Impact
Dobbins remains on the PUP list after more than a week of training camp, though he said at the very beginning that he felt he was ready for practice. The Ravens are holding him back, albeit with Harbaugh acknowledging multiple times that Dobbins is ahead of Gus Edwards in the rehab process. Both suffered ACL tears, and while Dobbins' reportedly was accompanied by other damage in his knee, it's Edwards who seems to be a bit behind rehab expectations. Dobbins still profiles as the lead back once he's ready, as the healthy options at Baltimore training camp right now are Mike Davis, Justice Hill, Corey Clement and Nate McCrary -- not the most inspiring bunch unless you're prioritizing coverage and blocking on special teams units.

Wants to practice ASAP
Dobbins (knee) believes he's ready to practice but for Wednesday will remain limited to on-field workouts after practice, Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic reports.
Impact
The Ravens want to take things a bit slower than Dobbins, who said last week that he hoped to avoid the active/PUP list. The Ravens placed him on it ahead of training camp, but it sounds like he'll be coming off soon to rejoin his teammates at practice. He seems to be ahead of fellow running back Gus Edwards, who suffered an ACL tear a couple weeks after Dobbins did. Ravens coach John Harbaugh recently said he wasn't sure if Edwards would be ready for Week 1.
