INJURIES

Sluggish output Wilson ran for 50 yards on 19 carries against Jacksonville on Sunday.
Impact Even in theory Wilson is more steady than explosive, and the Jaguars run defense has been surprisingly competent in 2021, so a disappointing box score like this was always in play for Wilson despite serving as the lead runner for the 30-10 victor. Elijah Mitchell (finger) clearly offers more explosiveness, but it remains to be seen whether he's available in Week 12 against Minnesota.
NOVEMBER 21, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Starting role likely awaits Wilson is expected to step in as the 49ers' lead back Sunday against the Jaguars with Elijah Mitchell (finger) listed as doubtful for the game, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury Ne...
Impact Mitchell has played more than half of the 49ers' offensive snaps and handled double-digit touches in all seven of his appearances this season, but Wilson looks to be the next man up for work out of the backfield with Mitchell likely to need a week off to recover from surgery to repair a broken finger. In addition, pass-catching specialist JaMycal Hasty (ankle) has been ruled out for the contest, which could clear the way for Wilson to handle a three-down role this weekend. Head coach Kyle Shanahan hasn't entrusted the remaining two healthy backs on the roster, Trey Sermon and Trenton Cannon, with roles on offense since Week 5, with both backs either being healthy inactives or contributors only on special teams in each of the past four contests. At least for this week, Wilson looks like a worthy starter in just about every fantasy league.
NOVEMBER 19, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Sees first 2021 action Wilson rushed 10 times for 28 yards in Monday's 31-10 win over the Rams.
Impact It was Wilson's second game since being activated off of the PUP list, but he was kept as a healthy scratch last week against the Cardinals. JaMycal Hasty (ankle) was unable to suit up against the Rams, so Wilson took over his backup role Monday. The 25-year-old appeared to be rusty with a mark of 2.8 yards per carry, and no running back saw a target due to a run-heavy gameplan. Wilson could potentially run with the backup role in San Francisco even after Hasty heals up given his experience in Kyle Shanahan's offense and his ability to catch the ball out of the backfield.
NOVEMBER 16, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Doesn't see field in return Wilson (knee) was activated off of the PUP list Sunday, but he did not record a snap in a 31-17 loss to the Cardinals.
Impact It was a bit surprising that Wilson didn't get involved in the offensive game plan given the lack of depth San Francisco has at the running back position. The 25-year-old was a solid fantasy contributor last season, contributing 733 combined yards and 10 combined touchdowns over 12 games (seven starts). Elijah Mitchell has been a revelation for the 49ers this season, so perhaps head coach Kyle Shanahan considers Wilson as the primary backup to the starter, keeping JaMycal Hasty in a third-down role. For now, Wilson only should be considered insurance for Mitchell owners heading into a Week 10 matchup against the Rams next Monday.
NOVEMBER 8, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Making season debut in Week 9 Wilson is active for Sunday's game against the Cardinals, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
Impact The same can be said for Elijah Mitchell, JaMycal Hasty and Trenton Cannon among 49ers running backs, while Trey Sermon is a healthy scratch. There's uncertainty about how much work Mitchell will be able to handle as he plays through a rib issue that limited him in practice this week, but Wilson is slated to mix in after completing his recovery from May surgery to repair his meniscus. in 28 career contests, Wilson has averaged 4.4 yards per carry, recorded 28 catches and scored 15 total touchdowns.
NOVEMBER 7, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Returns off PUP list Wilson (knee) was activated off the PUP list Saturday and will play in Sunday's divisional contest against the Cardinals, Doug Kyed of Pro Football Focus reports.
Impact Wilson was cleared to resume practice this week and the 49ers quickly activated the 25-year-old following a series of solid practices. Clear-cut starter Elijah Mitchell (ribs) is currently listed as questionable for Sunday's pivotal divisional contest, but he did manage to participate in back-to-back practices to close the week. It seems likely the 49ers will ease Wilson back into the fold, particularly given Mitchell's strong play in recent weeks, but it wouldn't be surprising to see the recently activated running back immediately take the change-of-pace carries from Trey Sermon.
NOVEMBER 6, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Week 9 return not ruled out San Francisco general manager John Lynch said "there's a chance" Wilson (knee) could be activated from the PUP list ahead of Sunday's game against the Cardinals, Matt Barrows of Th...
Impact After he was sidelined for the first eight weeks of the season while recovering from late-May surgery to repair a torn meniscus, Wilson was cleared to resume practicing this week. The 49ers will have a 21-day window to evaluate Wilson for a return to the roster, but with Lynch noting that the running back is already back in "tremendous shape," he hasn't been ruled out from making his return to the lineup after just three practices. San Francisco will wait and see how Wilson looks coming out of Friday's session before determining whether to activate him ahead of the 4 p.m. ET deadline Saturday for teams to make Week 9 roster moves.
NOVEMBER 5, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Practice window opens The 49ers designated Wilson (knee) for return from the reserve/PUP list Wednesday.
Impact Wilson has reached the final stages of his recovery from May surgery to repair a torn meniscus. He'll now have three weeks to practice and put himself in a position to return to game action. The 49ers backfield has been bombarded by injuries this season, with Raheem Mostert ruled out of the season after he suffered chipped cartilage in his left knee Week 1, Elijah Mitchell missing Weeks 3 and 4, and JaMycal Hasty spending time on IR from Weeks 3 through 5. Mitchell didn't practice Wednesday due to a rib injury, so Hasty, Trey Sermon and Trenton Cannon are the healthy backs on the active roster.
NOVEMBER 4, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Returning to practice soon The 49ers are expected to open the practice window for Wilson (knee) this week, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Impact Wilson has resided on the PUP list since the start of training camp due to May surgery to repair a torn meniscus. Such a listing required him to spend at least the first six contests of the season on the sideline, but he wasn't expected to be ready for game action until midseason in any case. If the 49ers designate Wilson to return in the coming days, he'll have a three-week window in which to prove the health of his knee. The team is down Raheem Mostert for the season with chipped cartilage in his left knee, leaving Elijah Mitchell (ribs), JaMycal Hasty, Trey Sermon and Trenton Cannon as the running backs on San Francisco's active roster.
NOVEMBER 1, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
May practice next week Wilson (knee) has a chance to practice next week, Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Impact Wilson already has missed the requisite six games in which to be activated from the reserve/PUP list, but his recovery from meniscus surgery in late May was expected to extend until midseason. The 49ers are closing in on the midpoint of their schedule, and a return to the practice field next week would give him three weeks to prove the health of his knee and put himself into a position to join the backfield between Weeks 9 and 12. The front end of that timetable seems unlikely because coach Kyle Shanahan believes Wilson still is a few weeks away from being ready, but in any case the running back appears as if he'll begin the final stages of his return in the near future.
OCTOBER 27, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Likely out until late November The 49ers aren't expecting Wilson (knee) to return from the PUP list until late November, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
Impact Back on Sept. 15, David Lombardi of The Athletic relayed that the 49ers were hoping Wilson would be back around mid-season, which falls around late October/early November. Barrows' latest report would seem to suggest that Wilson isn't progressing in his recovery from meniscus surgery quite as fast as the team initially anticipated, as a Week 11 game in Jacksonville on Nov. 21 now looks like the earliest potential date for the running back to make his 2021 debut. Wilson's continued absence should give rookie Elijah Mitchell at least a one-month window to build his job security as the 49ers' No. 1 back. Mitchell played 40 of a possible 59 offensive snaps (68 percent) in last week's loss to the Cardinals, while backups Trey Sermon (two snaps) and Trenton Cannon (zero) barely factored into the game plan.
OCTOBER 13, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
On track for midseason return Wilson (knee) recently resumed running and is still expected to return from the PUP list around midseason, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
Impact All eyes are on the San Francisco backfield after a wild Week 1 in which rookie third-round selection Trey Sermon was a healthy scratch and Raheem Mostert suffered a season-ending knee injury. Wilson may eventually help, but his presence on the PUP list means he can't play until Week 7 even if his rehab process speeds up. He had surgery in late May to repair a meniscus tear, with the recovery timeline set at 4-to-6 months.
SEPTEMBER 15, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Heads to reserve/PUP list The 49ers placed Wilson (knee) on the reserve/PUP list Tuesday, Chris Biderman of The Sacramento Bee reports.
Impact With Wilson set to miss at least the first six weeks of the season after undergoing surgery on a torn meniscus in late May, this move more or less was expected. Meanwhile, the 49ers opted to cut Wayne Gallman after the preseason, Raheem Mostert and Trey Sermon are slated to head the backfield, with JaMycal Hasty and Elijah Mitchell on hand for any reps that remain.
AUGUST 31, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Placed on PUP Wilson (knee) is on the PUP list to start training camp, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
Impact Most players on preseason PUP lists will be removed before the regular season, but that won't necessarily be the case with Wilson, who had surgery in late May to repair a torn meniscus. The rehab timeline was estimated at four-to-six months, with one report suggesting Wilson likely would stay on the PUP list for the beginning of the regular season, ruling him out for the first six games. He can still avoid that fate if his rehab trends toward the front end of the timeline, but Wilson isn't likely to make it back on the field at any point during training camp. Raheem Mostert, Trey Sermon and Wayne Gallman will compete for San Francisco's first- and second-team reps at running back, with Elijah Mitchell and JaMycal Hasty mixing in behind.
JULY 27, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Expected to miss first six weeks Wilson (knee) is expected to miss at least the first six weeks of the season, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
Impact Wilson was already expected to be sidelined for 4-to-6 months following surgery to repair a torn meniscus at the end of May, but this specific timeline report from Barrows indicates that the running back will be placed on the reserve/PUP list once training camp begins. Raheem Mostert is expected to lead the backfield attack in 2021, with Trey Sermon, Wayne Gallman and Elijah Mitchell (possibly in that order) jockeying for position during camp.
JULY 3, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Out 4-6 months after knee surgery Wilson recently underwent knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus and is expected to be sidelined 4-to-6 months, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
Impact It's a tough break for the the 25-year-old, who will now be sidelined for the start of the season and could be out into November if he returns on the long end of the initial timeline. Raheem Mostert is poised to open the season atop the depth chart, while rookies Trey Sermon and Elijah Mitchell and veteran Wayne Gallman will provide some much-needed depth in Wilson's absence.
MAY 25, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Re-ups in San Francisco Wilson signed a one-year contract with the 49ers on Tuesday, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Impact Wilson topped 100 yards twice during the 2021 season, including a 183-yard effort against the Cardinals in Week 16. He finished with 126 carries for 600 yards (4.8 YPC) and seven touchdowns, adding 12 receptions (28 targets) for 133 yards and three scores. Raheem Mostert is under contract for next season as well, so Wilson is slated to operate as the 1B back once again, barring any offseason additions. The 49ers' offensive dynamic could change next year if Jimmy Garoppolo is cut or traded, but head coach Kyle Shanahan has a long track record of setting his running backs up for success regardless of who is under center.
JANUARY 27, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Finishes with 10 TDs in 2020 Wilson received 23 touches for 88 combined yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's season finale, giving the back 733 combined yards from scrimmage and 10 total touchdowns in 12 games...
Impact Wilson narrowly made San Francisco's 53-man roster this season as the fourth running back on the depth chart, but he finished the year as the team's workhorse and potentially its best (and healthiest) option going into the 2021 campaign. The third-year man spent time sharing the workload with all three of the team's other veteran options at various parts of the season, but Wilson regularly saw the important fantasy touches around the goal line and in most passing situations. Head coach Kyle Shanahan finally let the 24-year-old take over the starting job in full for the final two contests, and he responded with 294 combined yards and three touchdowns over that span. As for next season, Shanahan has proven to have a preference for two-back rotations, so there is no guarantee that Wilson -- a restricted free agent -- will continue to dominate the backfield touches the way he had been doing to close out the 2020 campaign. That said, if Wilson were to end up in a situation in which he would see north of 20 touches per game, he is beginning to show that he can be a fantasy force with his well-rounded skillset and a nose for the end zone.
JANUARY 4, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Tops 200 total yards Wilson carried the ball 22 times for 183 yards in Week 16 against the Cardinals. He added one reception for 21 yards and a touchdown.
Impact Wilson worked as the clear lead back for the 49ers, accounting for 22 of the team's 30 rushing attempts. He tallied the team's first touchdown, hauling in a pass over the middle of the field before beating a number of defenders on a 21-yard dash to the end zone. Wilson also added plenty of production on the ground, including explosive gains of 34, 25 and 23 yards. With Raheem Mostert (ankle) ruled out for the remainder of the season, Wilson should be in line to handle the majority of carries in Week 17 against Seattle.
DECEMBER 27, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Clear of injury report Wilson (ankle) isn't listed on Tuesday's injury report.
Impact The 25-year-old sustained an ankle injury during Sunday's loss to the Cowboys, but his absence from the injury report indicates it was minor. Wilson should operate as San Francisco's No. 1 tailback the final two weeks of the season with Raheem Mostert (ankle) back on injured reserve.
DECEMBER 23, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Injures ankle Sunday Wilson suffered an ankle injury during Sunday's 41-33 loss at Dallas, Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Impact Wilson didn't get much run until Raheem Mostert departed in the third quarter after appearing to aggravate a left ankle injury. Overall, Mostert totaled 14 carries for 68 yards while Wilson notched 60 yards and one touchdown on 16 runs. With the 49ers' current top two running backs dealing with health concerns, Tevin Coleman (three rushes for 11 yards) and Jerick McKinnon (two catches for 22 yards on two targets) are the team's remaining health options at the position.
DECEMBER 20, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Cashes in on goal line Wilson rushed 11 times for 31 yards and a touchdown Sunday, adding 13 more yards on one reception (three targets) in a 23-15 loss to Washington.
Impact Starter Raheem Mostert out-touched Wilson, 16-12, but the latter was given the opportunity to punch the ball into the end zone from one yard out in the first quarter. The 25-year-old Wilson did, however, have an ugly drop late in the contest that would have extended a comeback drive, but the trip to the end zone salvaged what would have been a disappointing game. Even though Wilson technically is the backup in this offense, he brings added fantasy value as the preferred goal-line back along with his usage in the passing game (eight targets over the last two weeks). The 49ers will take on the Cowboys and their 32nd-ranked rush defense Week 15, giving Wilson and the rest of San Francisco's rushing attack a huge boost in immediate value.
DECEMBER 14, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Continues to split time Wilson rushed seven times for 47 yards and caught two passes (five targets) for 12 yards in Monday's 34-24 loss to Buffalo.
Impact Wilson continued to split the backfield workload with Raheem Mostert, logging 28 snaps (46 percent) to the latter's 27 (44 percent). Both backs took big chunks out of the opposition's defense, but neither reached double-digit carries after the 49ers fell behind by multiple scores in the second half. It appears that this is the one-two punch head coach Kyle Shanahan will roll with moving forward, as Tevin Coleman (four snaps) and Jerick McKinnon (two snaps) were both healthy for the contest, but barely saw the field. It is worth noting that Wilson was the preferred back used in passing situations (five targets to Mostert's one), remaining on the field for the entirety of San Francisco's final two comeback attempts. The 25-year-old was also deployed when the team was close to the goal line, even receiving a target in the end zone that quarterback Nick Mullens failed to complete. Mostert will be more appealing in standard formats for his ability to break off a big touchdown run at any moment, but Wilson has carved out a role -- especially for those in PPR formats -- for his use in the passing game and preferred usage as a goal-line back. Next week's opponent, the Washington Football Team, does not boast an explosive offense, which could keep the game score close and both running backs more involved in the gameplan.
DECEMBER 8, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Handles 12 carries in return Wilson carried 12 times for 43 yards and lost a fumble during Sunday's 23-20 win over the Rams.
Impact Making his first appearance in over a month after recovering from an ankle injury, Wilson finished four behind Raheem Mostert for the team lead in carries. He averaged just 3.6 yards per carry after averaging 6.6 over his previous two outings, and his fumble toward the end of the first quarter squandered excellent field position for his team. Wilson's usage with both Mostert and Jerick McKinnon available was a positive sign, but his playing time could diminish if Tevin Coleman (knee) returns next week as well.
NOVEMBER 30, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Returns Week 12 Wilson (ankle) is listed as active Sunday versus the Rams.
Impact Making his first appearance since Oct. 25 at New England, Wilson may factor into the 49ers backfield with Tevin Coleman (knee) unavailable. That said, Raheem Mostert also was activated from IR on Saturday, so Wilson could play second or even third fiddle with Jerick McKinnon on hand.
