Marquise Brown's long-awaited return: Chiefs wide receiver set for season opener in Brazil

Wide receiver Marquise Brown has been eagerly anticipating the Kansas City Chiefs' season opener against the Los Angeles Chargers in Brazil

SEPTEMBER 3, 2025 • Associated Press

Ruled out for Week 1 Royals (knee) is ruled out for Friday's regular-season opener against the Chargers and will not travel with the team to Brazil.

Impact Coach Andy Reid previously said he didn't expect Royals to be available Week 1, so his being ruled out doesn't come as a surprise. Kansas City didn't hold a practice session Wednesday, but he was a non-participant Tuesday due to lingering knee tendinitus. The rookie fourth-round pick's next chance to play will arrive Week 2 at home versus the Eagles. With Rashee Rice suspended the first six games of the season, Royals will have a path to compete with JuJu Smith-Schuster for snaps behind Xavier Worthy and Hollywood Brown once fully healthy.

DNP on Tuesday Royals (knee) did not practice Tuesday, Pete Sweeney of ArrowheadPride.com reports.

Impact Coach Andy Reid already said last week that he didn't expect Royals to be available to play in Friday's Week 1 opener against the Chargers. The rookie wideout is dealing with knee tendinitis. With Rashee Rice also out due to suspension, Kansas City's top wideouts against Los Angeles are expected to be Xavier Worthy, Hollywood Brown and JuJu Smith-Schuster.

Looking unlikely for Week 1 Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said Friday that Royals (knee) is not expected to suit up against the Chargers in Week 1, Jesse Newell of The Athletic reports.

Impact Royals missed Kansas City's preseason finale due to knee tendinitis and looks set to also sit out the team's regular-season opener, but as the Chiefs didn't place him on IR while cutting down to a 53-man roster, it seems the rookie fourth-round pick is expected to miss less than four games before returning to action. With Rashee Rice (suspension) out the first six weeks of the season, Royals will have an opportunity to push for snaps behind Xavier Worthy, Hollywood Brown (ankle) and JuJu Smith-Schuster once healthy.

Remains sidelined Tuesday Royals (knee) remained sidelined for Tuesday's practice, Charles Goldman of AtoZSports.com reports.

Impact Royals is battling knee tendinitis and missed the Chiefs' final preseason contest. Coach Andy Reid indicated Tuesday that Royals' return isn't imminent, according to Goldman. His availability for Week 1 against the Chargers on Sept. 5 appears to be in question. Royals' early-season role is to be determined behind Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy, Hollywood Brown (ankle) and JuJu Smith-Schuster.

DNP due to knee tendinitis Royals (knee tendinitis) won't practice Monday, Matt McMullen of the Chiefs' official site reports.

Impact It remains to be seen whether Royals' knee tendinitis is something he can manage and possibly play through, but this injury has cropped up at an unfortunate time, with Kansas City's Sept. 5 regular-season opener against the Chargers fast approaching. The rookie fourth-round pick had been receiving some first-team reps in practice as Kansas City deals with numerous injuries to its receiving corps, and Royals has contributed 75 yards on two kickoff returns through two preseason games, in addition to catching three of five targets for 14 receiving yards. The Chiefs will wrap up preseason play Friday against the Bears.

40 all-purpose yards in win Royals brought in three of five targets for 14 yards and returned one kickoff for 26 yards in the Chiefs' 20-17 preseason loss to the 49ers on Saturday night.

Impact The rookie fourth-round pick was solid in his first taste of professional game action, and he logged a team-high target total while also tying for the lead in receptions. Royals will presumably have a steep climb to meaningful playing time whenever the Chiefs' top four receivers are available, but he could certainly see expanded opportunity whenever Rashee Rice serves what's expected to be a multi-game suspension.

Sees some first-team reps Royals logged most of his repetitions during Wednesday's practice with the first-team offense, Nate Taylor of ESPN reports.

Impact Taylor notes that Royals fared well Wednesday, while running routes alongside fellow wideouts Xavier Worthy and Hollywood Brown. The report adds that the rookie fourth-rounder was often on the field when Rashee Rice wasn't, which is worth noting considering the possibility that Rice may be suspended by the NFL before the start of the regular season, a scenario that could pave the way for Royals to step into an increased role in the Chiefs offense.
