INJURIES

Won't play Sunday Edwards (ankle) has been ruled out for Sunday's regular season finale against the Raiders.
Impact Edwards, who was unable to practice this week, will thus target a potential return to action when the Chargers commence their playoff run next weekend. In his absence versus Las Vegas, J.K. Dobbins is in line to lead the team's backfield, with Hassan Haskins and Kimani Vidal available to mix in.
JANUARY 3 • ROTOWIRE
Still not practicing Edwards (ankle) wasn't spotted at practice Thursday, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.
Impact Edwards, who was inactive for the Chargers' Week 17 win over the Patriots, also didn't practice Wednesday, so he'll probably need to work fully Friday in order to approach Sunday's game against the Raiders without an injury designation. Even if Edwards is available this weekend, his Week 18 fantasy upside would be modest, given that J.K. Dobbins has reclaimed his role as Los Angeles' lead back.
JANUARY 2 • ROTOWIRE
Not ready to return to practice Edwards (ankle) isn't practicing Wednesday, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.
Impact Edwards missed the Chargers' final two practices last week due to the ankle issue and didn't end up playing Saturday versus the Patriots. It's not clear how serious the injury is, but the veteran running back will likely need to practice in some capacity by the end of this week in order to have a realistic chance of suiting up Sunday versus Las Vegas. Edwards' absence last weekend was soothed by the return of J.K. Dobbins, who was activated off IR and reclaimed his role as Los Angeles' No. 1 running back.

Chargers Rule Out Gus Edwards Well Ahead of Playoff Decider vs Patriots The Los Angeles Chargers ruled out running back Gus Edwards for Saturday’s game against the New England Patriots.
DECEMBER 26, 2024 • NEWSOBSERVER.COM
Won't play Week 17 The Chargers have ruled Edwards (ankle) out for Saturday's game against the Patriots.
Impact Though Edwards was listed as a limited participant in both of the Chargers' first two Week 17 practices, he didn't display enough progress in his recovery from the ankle injury for the team to feel comfortable clearing him for Saturday's contest. His absence currently leaves Kimani Vidal and Hassan Haskins as the lone healthy options at running back on the active roster, though J.K. Dobbins (knee) -- who is listed as questionable -- could be activated from injured reserve ahead of Saturday's game and settle back in as Los Angeles' lead option out of the backfield.
DECEMBER 26, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Estimated as limited Wednesday Edwards (ankle) was listed as limited on Wednesday's practice estimate.
Impact Edwards, who was also listed as limited Tuesday, has one more chance to practice fully ahead of Saturday's game against the Patriots. The same applies to fellow running back J.K. Dobbins (knee/IR), whose 21-day practice window opened Monday. Added context regarding the composition of the Chargers' Week 17 backfield is thus set to arrive after Thursday's practice.
DECEMBER 25, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Limited by ankle injury Edwards was a limited participant in Tuesday's practice due to an ankle injury.
Impact Though the Chargers have a lengthier turnaround for Saturday's game at New England after playing Thursday night in Week 16, the extra time off apparently wasn't enough for Edwards to participate fully in practice to begin Week 17 prep. The Chargers didn't provide any indication that Edwards tweaked his ankle in the 34-27 win over the Broncos last week, so it's possible that the injury might have been something that popped up in Tuesday's practice. In any case, Edwards' activity in practice the next two days bears monitoring before the Chargers will have to decide whether he takes an injury designation into Saturday.

Excels as lead back Thursday Edwards rushed 14 times for 68 yards and two touchdowns and brought in one of two targets for three yards in the Chargers' 34-27 win over the Broncos on Thursday night.
Impact Edwards was the surprising leader of the Chargers' ground attack Thursday night with his highest carry total since Week 2 and best rushing yardage tally of the campaign. The veteran back also flashed his signature red-zone prowess by recording one- and five-yard rushing scores in the first and third quarters, respectively. Edwards' rookie backfield mate Kimani Vidal carried just five times and didn't see any targets, so the former should head into a Week 17 road matchup against the Patriots on Saturday, Dec. 28 with the lead-back job in hand.

Struggles in one-sided loss Edwards rushed eight times for 23 yards and was not targeted as a receiver in Sunday's 40-17 loss to the Buccaneers.
Impact Edwards couldn't get anything going on the ground, resulting in a mediocre 2.9 yards per carry average. The power back isn't tailored for an offense trying to comeback from a large deficit like the Chargers were Sunday. The 29-year-old has struggled in three starts since taking over for J.K. Dobbins (knee), averaging a meager 30.3 yards per game over that span. Edwards needs to show some life against the Broncos on Thursday or he may begin losing snaps to rookie Kimani Vidal.

Scores touchdown in loss Edwards tallied 10 carries for 36 yards and a touchdown in the 19-17 loss to the Chiefs on Sunday.
Impact The bruising running back scored just his second touchdown of the season. For a second consecutive week Edwards led the team in carries, but rookie Kimani Vidal was also a factor tallying eight carries for 34 yards. The backfield breakdown is worth monitoring with J.K. Dobbins (knee) still on injured reserve for at minimum two more weeks, but it's becoming clear Los Angeles' rushing attack just doesn't lack the same gusto it did when Dobbins was one of the bell cows.
