Impact When the Cowboys posted their first Week 2 injury report Wednesday, David Helman of the Cowboys' official site noted Lawrence left practice early due to a foot issue. Now that the extent of the injury is known, Lawrence's potential return date could come down to whether he requires surgery to repair the fracture. While Lawrence recovers, Dallas may explore outside options for pass-rushing help, as Randy Gregory, Tarell Basham and Dorance Armstrong are the only defensive ends on the team who have recorded sacks in their pro careers.

Impact The veteran pass rusher underwent offseason back surgery and the Cowboys have been bringing Lawrence along slowly since activating him from the PUP list in early August, but his workload is now on the upswing as Week 1 approaches. The 29-year-old hasn't missed a game since 2016 despite ongoing back woes -- which the surgery was intended to correct -- but Lawrence has managed only 11.5 sacks over the last two seasons combined. If he's 100 percent healthy again and can stay that way, he should be capable of a rebound campaign.

Finishing rehab from back surgery Lawrence has been placed on the PUP list for the start of training camp after undergoing back surgery this offseason, Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports.

Impact It was the third back surgery of Lawrence's career, but coach Mike McCarthy says it was "more of a cleanup" and suggested the defensive end should be ready to practice soon. Lawrence has recorded only 11.5 sacks in 32 games the past two seasons, down from 25 sacks in 32 games over the previous two years (2017-18), despite ostensibly still being in his prime (he turned 29 in April). Part of the issue is a lack of pass-rush help, which the Cowboys haven't done much to address.

Another lackluster season Lawrence recorded 58 tackles (34 solo) while adding 6.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, two passes defended and a fumble recovery over 16 games in 2020.

Impact The veteran defensive end once again gave it his all on the field without seeing much in the way of IDP production. Lawrence did have his moments -- 4.5 of his sacks came during a seven-game stretch in the middle of the season -- but he doesn't get enough help in the pass rush to avoid extra attention from opposition blockers. Randy Gregory did have a couple of big games in the second half, however, and if he can take a step forward and present a consistent threat, Lawrence could be freed up to get after the QB more often in 2021.
