49ers lament missed opportunity in loss to Eagles
A night of sleep did nothing to ease the frustration San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan felt after the 49ers let another home game get away from them

Limited role in loss
Samuel (foot) caught all three of his targets for 35 yards and added 10 yards on one carry in Sunday's 25-20 loss to the Eagles.
Impact
Samuel was activated off injured reserve prior to Sunday's contest after undergoing offseason surgery on his injured foot. The 24-year-old was eased back into action in a limited role, but still produced numbers similar to his pre-injury performance, at least on a per-snap basis. Expect Samuel's workload to increase next week against the Dolphins as the wideout inches towards being back to full strength.

Taken off injured reserve
Samuel (foot) was activated off injured reserve Saturday, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
Impact
The explosive wideout is now set to play Sunday night, meaning both Samuel and George Kittle (knee) will be together on the field for the first time all season. It's reasonable to assume the 49ers might ease Samuel back into game shape, particularly with the team heavily favored against a dysfunctional Eagles roster, but with Raheem Mostert (knee) and Tevin Coleman (knee) both absent from the equation, it's possible the offense might be forced to utilize the second-year player more than it might like. Expect a slight regression from Brandon Aiyuk (eight touches, 101 total yards and a touchdown in Week 3) with both Kittle and Samuel now officially back in the fold.

In line to play Sunday
Samuel (foot) is slated to play Sunday night against the Eagles, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
Impact
That said, it looks like Samuel will be eased back into the mix in his 2020 season debut. With that in mind, coach Kyle Shanahan noted of the wideout Friday, "We've got to be smart with him. I know he'll be out there (Sunday), but it won't be his normal role, that's for sure." Samuel must still be activated off IR by the team by Saturday at 4 p.m. ET in order to suit up Week 4, but that transaction is looming, with either defensive end Dee Ford or tight end Jordan Reed likely to move to IR in a corresponding move.

Working to get in 'game shape'
San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan said Wednesday he considers Samuel (foot) to be healthy, but the wide receiver's focus now is "getting in game shape," David Lombardi of The...
Impact
The 49ers opened a 21-day window Wednesday in which to activate Samuel from injured reserve. They'll use the next three days to get a sense of the "shape he's in, and if he can protect himself, he'll be out there," Shanahan told Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News. As a result, Samuel may be able to rejoin a receiving corps that's been banged up throughout the season in Sunday's game against the Eagles. At the moment, Kendrick Bourne, Brandon Aiyuk, Trent Taylor, Mohamed Sanu and Dante Pettis are the wide receivers available for the 49ers.

Practice window officially opens
The 49ers designated Samuel (foot) to return from injured reserve Wednesday.
Impact
The transaction opens up a 21-day practice window through which the 49ers will be able to evaluate Samuel for a return to the active roster. San Francisco could technically activate Samuel in time for him to suit up Sunday versus the Eagles, but the team is believed to be targeting its Week 5 game against the Dolphins for the wideout's 2020 debut. Kendrick Bourne and Brandon Aiyuk will continue to serve as the team's top wideouts until Samuel is able to return, with Trent Taylor, Mohamed Sanu and Dante Pettis all handling depth roles.

In line to practice Wednesday
Samuel (foot) is expected to return to practice Wednesday, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
Impact
As Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported Sunday, Samuel should make an appearance at practice this week, but the 49ers intend to ease him into the fold as he works to be activated from injured reserve. Due to the 2020-based IR rules, the team can technically bring Samuel off the list before Sunday's game versus the Eagles. That said, San Francisco likely will wait until its Week 5 contest against the Dolphins on Oct. 11 to do so. In the meantime, the 49ers' receiving corps will continue to be manned by Kendrick Bourne, Brandon Aiyuk, Trent Taylor, Mohamed Sanu and Dante Pettis.

Likely eyeing Week 5 return
Samuel (foot) should resume practicing during the upcoming week, but the 49ers aren't expecting to bring him back from injured reserve until their Week 5 game against the Dolphins...
Impact
Since he opened the season on IR, Samuel is eligible to return beginning in Week 4, but given the 49ers' desire to ease him back from his June surgery to repair a Jones fracture in his left foot, the wideout likely won't gain clearance to play next Sunday against the Eagles. The 49ers will likely wait and see how Samuel looks in practice this week before formally deciding on his status for the Philadelphia game. Samuel is one of several key San Francisco skill-position players that has missed time already this season, as tight end George Kittle (knee), quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle) and running backs Raheem Mostert (knee) and Tevin Coleman (knee) will all join him on the sideline in the team's Week 3 game against the Giants.

On track to practice next week
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Samuel (foot) has looked good running routes and should return to practice next week, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Impact
A Week 4 return has been the goal ever since Samuel was placed on injured reserve. His availability for next Sunday's game against the Eagles remains uncertain, but it sounds like he'll at least make it back to the practice field, where the 49ers can then evaluate his health and explosiveness. The Niners certainly could use the help, as they're currently preparing to face the Giants in Week 3 without QB Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle), TE George Kittle (knee) and RBs Raheem Mostert (knee) and Tevin Coleman (knee) in the lineup. Samuel should be a crucial part of the offense whenever he's ready, whether he's catching passes from Garoppolo or Nick Mullens.
