Ruled out Samuel (foot) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Cardinals, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
Impact Coach Kyle Shanahan was optimistic about Samuel returning from mid-June foot surgery for Week 1, but the wideout never even made it to the practice field this week, instead remaining focused on his rehab. With no report of a setback, it's possible Samuel could return as soon as Week 2 or 3. In the meantime, the 49ers will rely on some combination of Kendrick Bourne, Trent Taylor, Dante Pettis and Richie James, plus rookie first-round pick Brandon Aiyuk (hamstring, questionable) if he's available. Bourne, Taylor, Pettis and Aiyuk are the favorites to see Week 1 snaps and targets.

Doesn't practice Thursday Samuel (foot) was held out of practice Thursday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
Impact This marks the second day in a row in which Samuel didn't get on the field, hurting his chances of being available Sunday against the Cardinals. Friday's injury report could reveal the 49ers' decision regarding the wide receiver for Week 1, but ultimately they don't need to make the final call until 90 minutes before Sunday's 4:25 p.m. ET kickoff. An absence from Samuel would elevate Kendrick Bourne and Trent Taylor to bigger roles to start the season.

No practice reps Wednesday Samuel (foot) didn't practice Wednesday, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
Impact Prior to drills, coach Kyle Shanahan gave Samuel "a small chance" to practice, but ultimately the second-year wide receiver didn't fit in any reps. Samuel is in the final stages of his recovery from a Jones fracture in his left foot. That said, he likely has to prove he can operate somewhat close to normal to get the all-clear from the 49ers' medical staff. Samuel has two more chances to take the field before week's end.

Not expected to practice Wednesday Coach Kyle Shannahan said Wednesday that Samuel has (foot) is not expected to practice but has "a small chance" to, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
Impact Samuel could still have a shot to suit up for Sunday's season opener against the Cardinals, but he might first have to successfully resume practicing. Wednesday's first official injury report of the season will shed more light on the second-year pro's chances for Week 1.

Week 1 still in play Samuel (foot) did not participate in Monday's practice, but a decision regarding his status for Week 1 could be made in the coming days, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
Impact We got some positive news regarding Samuel when the team lifted him from the NFI list this past weekend, and it sounds like Week 1 remains in play. Team officials have flip-flopped on the sophomore's status following offseason foot surgery in June, but they will bring in foot specialist Dr. Robert Anderson to be a part of the decision-making process Tuesday, which should help provide a clearer picture of the wideout's availability.

Lifted from NFI list The 49ers activated Samuel (foot) from the active/non-football injury list Saturday.
Impact With the move official, Samuel can continue his quest to play Week 1 following more than two months spent in recovery mode due to a Jones fracture in his left foot. Along the way, he was spotted running sprints on the side during an Aug. 26 session and may return to the practice field in the lead up to the season opener Sept. 13 versus the Cardinals.

Teams sending QBs packing in final cuts despite pandemic

The theory that NFL teams would go with three quarterbacks to start the pandemic-impacted season took a hit Saturday
SEPTEMBER 5, 2020 • Associated Press
May be available Week 1 Samuel (foot) may be activated from the active/non-football injury list prior to a Week 1 matchup with the Cardinals, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Impact While taking part in joint workouts with his teammates in Nashville back in June, Samuel suffered what eventually was deemed to be a Jones fracture in his left foot. He underwent surgery and was expected to require 10-to-12 weeks to recover fully, putting his availability for the season opener in jeopardy. Having said that, Samuel was seen sprinting on a side field in late August, and there's potential for the second-year wide receiver to practice during Week 1 prep. As a result, his status should be watched closely over the next week.

Could practice next week Coach Kyle Shanahan said Wednesday that he's hopeful Samuel (foot) will be back at practice next week, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
Impact Samuel is pushing to get on the field for the 49ers' Sept. 13 season opener against Arizona, and a return to practice next week would represent an important step in the right direction. The versatile wideout suffered a Jones fracture in his left foot back in June and was projected to miss 10-to-12 weeks. Even if Samuel receives medical clearance in time to suit up Week 1, the possibility that he could be on a restricted snap count can't be ignored.
