No rally this time as Foles struggles, Bears lose to Colts
Chicago Bears quarterback Nick Foles could stage no magical comeback against the Indianapolis Colts
OCTOBER 5, 2020
•
Associated Press
Receives 13 touches
Montgomery rushed 10 times for 27 yards and caught three passes for 30 yards in the Bears' 19-11 loss to the Colts on Sunday.
Impact
Facing a swarming Indianapolis run defense, Montgomery rarely had any room to operate on the ground, and he failed to gain more than six yards on any of his rushing attempts. With the Bears trailing throughout, they were unable to run a balanced offense, keeping Montgomery from seeing a bigger workload. With at least 57 combined yards in each game this season, he'll continue to be a top-24 running back with a solid weekly floor.

Receives 16 touches in win
Montgomery rushed 14 times for 45 yards and caught two passes for nine yards in the Bears' 30-26 victory over the Falcons on Sunday.
Impact
Montgomery was routinely stuffed over his first nine carries of the game, as he was averaging fewer than 1.5 yards on those attempts, but he fortunately had a few productive runs while the Bears were in the process of making up a huge deficit, as he found more room to operate. He's carried the ball between 13 and 16 times in each game this season, giving him a solid weekly floor as a top-25 running back.

Leads team in rushing and receiving
Montgomery rushed 16 times for 82 yards while catching all three of his targets for 45 yards and a touchdown in Chicago's 17-13 victory over the Giants on Sunday.
Impact
For the first time in his career, Montgomery exceeded five yards per rushing attempt, as he was frequently able to get into space and make defenders miss. In addition, he out-targeted backfield mate Tarik Cohen for the second week in a row, and it would appear that he's a player the coaching staff is preparing to lean on throughout the season. However, it should be noted that he's been productive against a pair of weak run defenses, though his current role in the offense provides optimism that he can be trusted as a top-24 running back option each week.

Returns to action
Montgomery (neck) returned to Sunday's game versus the Giants, Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic reports.
Impact
Montgomery landed on his head when he lept over a pile in the second quarter, but after being evaluated in the locker room, the second-year RB has returned to the game.

Injures neck Sunday
Montgomery sustained a neck injury during Sunday's game against the Giants, Colleen Kane of the Chicago Tribune reports.
Impact
While attempting to leap over a pile on a first-down play early in the second quarter, Montgomery landed on his head, came off the field under his own power and visited the blue sideline tent. Deemed questionable to return, he'll yield running back reps to Tarik Cohen and Ryan Nall.

Leads team in carries
Montgomery rushed 13 times for 64 yards while catching one of three targets for an additional 10 yards in the Bears' 27-23 victory over Detroit.
Impact
After missing practice time over the last few weeks with a groin injury, Montgomery handled his typical role as the early-down runner, and he consistently posted positive yardage on his attempts against a Lions' defensive line that failed to get consistent penetration into the backfield. With the Bears trailing by over two touchdowns in the third quarter, he saw very few rushing attempts down the stretch because the team had to employ a pass-heavy attack. With very little competition for touches, he should continue to be a volume-based top-24 weekly fantasy option at running back.

Ready to go for Week 1
Montgomery (groin) is active for Sunday's game in Detroit.
Impact
Montgomery looked in serious jeopardy of missing the season opener after straining his groin in an Aug. 26 workout, but the running back was able to clear up most of the concern about his availability by logging full practices Thursday and Friday. The second-year back still carried a questionable tag into the weekend, but now that he's been formally cleared, Montgomery is expected to handle a full workload Sunday. No. 2 back Tarik Cohen will also have a role in the Bears' game plan, with most of his reps coming as a change-of-pace option.

Expected to suit up for opener
Montgomery (groin) is expected to be active and receive a full workload in Sunday's season opener against the Lions, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.
Impact
This anticipated outcome was foreshadowed by Montgomery's full participation in practice Friday. It's still worth confirming the running back's availability for Sunday's 1:00 ET kickoff, but in the absence of any setbacks, Montgomery is line to head the Bears' Week 1 backfield, with Tarik Cohen and Ryan Nall in reserve.

Expected to play
Montgomery (groin) was a full practice participant Friday but is officially listed as questionable for Sunday's game in Detroit.
Impact
Dan Wiederer of the Chicago Tribune notes that Montgomery likely would be listed as 'probable' if the NFL still used that designation. Montgomery closed out the week with back-to-back full practices after Wednesday's limited session, putting him on track for the starting role Sunday in Detroit. However, it's probably best to check back in once inactive lists come out Sunday morning, as it wasn't too long ago that Montgomery's Week 1 status was a major source of concern. The Bears' roster decisions provided one big hint, with Tarik Cohen and Ryan Nall being the only other running backs on the team (though Cordarrelle Patterson can take backfield snaps in a pinch).

Full participant Thursday
Montgomery (groin) practiced fully Thursday, Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Impact
Montgomery kicked off Week 1 prep with a limited session, the result of a groin strain suffered Aug. 26. He touched on the limitations Thursday, telling Stacey Dales of NFL Network that he "didn't do much in practice yesterday. Wanna be safe." By getting in a full session, Montgomery is ready to lead the Bears backfield Sunday at Detroit, at least on early downs.

Gets 'limited' tag Wednesday
Montgomery (groin) was listed as a limited participant at Wednesday's practice.
Impact
Montgomery picked up a groin strain during an Aug. 26 practice, when he slipped on the field while taking a handoff from Mitchell Trubisky. His initial recovery timeline was 2-to-4 weeks, which conveniently coincided with the Bears' opener Sept. 13. While coach Matt Nagy told Jeff Dickerson of ESPN.com before Wednesday's session that Montgomery was "gonna have a hell of a stretch practice," the running back proceeded to add individual drills to the mix and received a "limited" tag on the injury report. According to Colleen Kane of the Chicago Tribune, Tarik Cohen said Wednesday that Montgomery "bounced back off that [injury] so fast" and looked like he normally does. Therefore, Montgomery may be trending toward active status for Sunday's game in Detroit.
