Remains top TE option for now
Brate slots in as the No. 1 tight end on the Buccaneers' depth chart for the time being with Rob Gronkowski still non-committal about a return and O.J. Howard having departed for t...
Impact
That said, the veteran's standing at the top of the heap isn't likely to last even as far as training camp. As Zac Blobner of 95.3 WDAE St. Petersburg notes, Gronkowski alluded to there being a "very good chance" of his return to the Buccaneers in 2022, a possibility that likely increased in the wake of Tom Brady's recent decision to come out of a brief retirement for at least one more season. Additionally, the team is likely to focus on the tight end position with at least one of its draft picks this April, and there are at least a couple of free-agent options still on the market that could presumably slot in ahead of Brate were they to be signed.

Agrees to restructure contract
The Buccaneers and Brate agreed Wednesday to restructure his contract to a two-year, $8 million deal, Jenna Laine of ESPN.com reports.
Impact
The six-year contract that Brate signed in 2018 locked him in with Tampa Bay through the 2023 season, but the restructure lowers the cap hits in both of the next two years. The statuses of Rob Gronkowski and/or O.J. Howard remain in flux with both free agents this offseason, but at the very least, the newly un-retired Tom Brady has Brate at his disposal at tight end in 2022.

One catch in season-ending loss
Brate secured one of three targets for nine yards during the Buccaneers' 30-27 loss to the Rams in their NFC divisional-round matchup Sunday.
Impact
Brate had a minimal role in the season-ending defeat, even with Breshad Perriman (hip) and Cyril Grayson (hamstring) sitting out the contest and thereby thinning out the Buccaneers' pass-catching corps further. The veteran tight end remains under contract for the next two seasons at cap hits of $7.3 and $7.9 million, but it remains to be seen what type of offensive overhaul the team might undergo this offseason should Tom Brady decide to call it a career and Brate's position mate Rob Gronkowski opts to join him in retirement.

Three catches in playoff opener
Brate brought in all three targets for 29 yards during the Buccaneers' 31-15 win over the Eagles in an NFC wild-card matchup Sunday.
Impact
The veteran tight end filled his usual complementary role effectively and checked in third on the team in receptions on the afternoon. Brate's catch total was his highest since Week 12 against the Colts, and he should be set for modest volume once again in next Sunday's divisional-round matchup against the Rams.

Solid complementary numbers in '21
Brate, who brought in two of three targets for 12 yards in the Buccaneers' 41-17 win over the Panthers in Week 18, finished the 2021 regular season with 30 receptions (57 targets)...
Impact
Brate's numbers were essentially right in line with his average figures over the three prior campaigns, a stretch during which he'd tallied 31.3 catches for 294 yards and four touchdowns per season. The veteran tight end continued to serve as the clear No. 2 option at the position behind Rob Gronkowski, and with the Buccaneers entering the postseason with a short-handed receiving corps, he could potentially see an uptick in involvement as Tampa Bay attempts another championship run.

Another TD in Week 17 win
Brate brought in two of three targets for five yards and a touchdown in the Buccaneers' 28-24 win over the Jets on Sunday.
Impact
Brate was able to make good use of his scant opportunities, crossing the goal line for the second time in as many games on a four-yard grab late in the third quarter. Brate's targets will likely continue to be limited in Week 18 and the postseason, but Antonio Brown's expected release should theoretically open up more potential targets in the air attack.

Gets into end zone in win
Brate brought in two of four targets for 11 yards and a touchdown in the Buccaneers' 32-6 win over the Panthers on Sunday.
Impact
The veteran tight end didn't really see an appreciable uptick in targets despite the absences of multiple pass-catching options, but he did find the end zone on a four-yard grab late in the first half. Brate has three straight two-catch efforts and touchdowns in two of his last four contests, giving him some value in very deep formats for those desperate at tight end in their championship games in Week 17.

Another two catches
Brate brought in two of four targets for 22 yards in the Buccaneers' 9-0 loss to the Saints on Sunday night.
Impact
Brate produced a pair of receptions for the second straight game and failed to crack 30 yards for the 11th consecutive contest in the process. The veteran tight end's fantasy needle might be moved just slightly with the season-ending injury to Chris Godwin (knee) and the possible Week 16 absences of Leonard Fournette and Mike Evans with hamstring injuries, but even in such a scenario, he's unlikely to see more than a couple of targets over the 3.9 he's averaging thus far this season.

Pair of grabs in win
Brate brought in two of four targets for 11 yards in the Buccaneers' 33-27 overtime win over the Bills on Sunday.
Impact
Brate played on just 25% of the snaps, equating to 21 plays from scrimmage. The veteran tight end is still clearly ahead of non-factor O.J. Howard (five snaps), but as long as Rob Gronkowski is healthy, Brate is typically a touchdown-or-bust option each week.

Finds end zone on one catch
Brate secured his only target for a three-yard touchdown in the Buccaneers' 30-17 win over the Falcons on Sunday.
Impact
The veteran tight end played just 19% of snaps (13), but he was able to make good use of his one reception. Brate's three-yard score late in the first quarter served as his second touchdown reception of the season, matching his 2020 total, which was achieved over 16 games. Brate's visit to the end zone notwithstanding, he remains an option only in very deep PPR formats and as a DFS dart throw due to his typically low volume and limited role behind Rob Gronkowski.
