Out with concussion
Brate (concussion) will not play Sunday against the Falcons, Scott Smith of the Buccaneers' official site reports.
Impact
Rookie fourth-round pick Cade Otton played 67 percent of snaps last week with Brate exiting early from the 41-31 loss to Kansas City. Tight ends have accounted for only 17.8 percent of the Bucs' targets and 15.5 percent of their receiving yards, and the number could be even lower in the long run if the team's talented wide receivers stay relatively healthy. Ko Kieft and Kyle Rudolph are the TEs behind Otton for Sunday's home game.

Still spectating at practice
Brate (concussion) didn't take part in drills with the Buccaneers at practice Thursday and is expected to be listed as a non-participant on the team's second Week 5 injury report,...
Impact
Brate was at least present for the practice session, as Kevin O'Donnell of Fox 13 Tampa Bay notes that the tight end was working off to the side with a trainer as he navigates the NFL's five-step concussion protocol. The fact that Brate hasn't yet been able to resume even limited participation in practice doesn't inspire much confidence that he'll be able to clear the protocol prior to Sunday's game against the Falcons, but the Buccaneers will wait and see what progress, if any, he makes Friday before giving him a designation for the Week 5 contest. Cade Otton would be the next man up at tight end if Brate can't play Sunday.

Not practicing yet
Brate (concussion) didn't practice Wednesday.
Impact
Brate was concussed in the loss to Kansas City on Sunday night, which led to rookie TE Cade Otton setting new highs for snap share (67 percent), catches (three) and targets (four). The Bucs also have Ko Kieft and Kyle Rudolph, though the latter has been a healthy scratch three times through four weeks. They might also consider using four-wide formations if Brate isn't ready for Sunday's game against Atlanta while all of Mike Evans, Russell Gage (hamstring), Chris Godwin (knee) and Julio Jones (knee) manage to play.

Out due to concussion protocol
Brate (concussion protocol) has been ruled out for the remainder of Sunday's game against the Chiefs.
Impact
Brate collided with wide receiver Chris Godwin in the first half. The tight end briefly returned to the game after being shaken up on the play, but Brate was removed soon after that and subsequently ruled out. He'll need to clear concussion protocol to suit up in Week 5 against the Falcons.

Makes five grabs
Brate caught five of six targets for 52 yards in Sunday's 14-12 loss to the Packers.
Impact
Brate offered a reliable option for quarterback Tom Brady while he was without his usual top three wide receivers. After posting merely 16 yards through the first two weeks of the season, Brate's output Sunday was a needed boost. Whether the Buccaneers' receiving corps is back to full strength in Week 4 or not, Brate will strive to remain involved as Tampa Bay hosts Kansas City.

One grab in Week 2 victory
Brate brought in one of two targets for nine yards in the Buccaneers' 20-10 win over the Saints on Sunday.
Impact
Despite the Buccaneers' air attack being down both Chris Godwin (hamstring) and Julio Jones (knee), Brate matched his meager catch total from Week 1. The veteran was in on 38 offensive snaps overall (57 percent) and garnered active status over Kyle Rudolph once again, but it's clear Brate is down in the pecking order among Tom Brady's targets.

Not playing Saturday
Brate isn't slated to play in Saturday's preseason game at Tennessee, Scott Smith of the Buccaneers' official site reports.
Impact
Along with Brate, 21 other Buccaneers won't suit up, including quarterback Tom Brady (personal), running back Giovani Bernard (ankle) and wide receivers Mike Evans (hamstring), Chris Godwin (knee), Russell Gage, Breshad Perriman (leg) and Cyril Grayson. With Brate on the pine, Kyle Rudolph, Cade Otton and Ko Kieft, among others, are the tight ends available to the team this weekend.

Impact
Brate may not be atop the heap for long, however, at least not without sharing that spot with one of several veteran tight ends still available on the open market. His last season with over 500 snaps from scrimmage came back in 2018, and heading into his age-32 campaign, Brate is most effective when sharing time with another capable pass-catching option at the position. Rookie Cade Otton (ankle) could also eventually eat into Brate's snaps depending on how quickly he picks up the team's offense.
