Added to COVID-19 list Cincinnati placed Allen on the reserve/COVID-19 list after he tested positive for the virus, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.

Impact Allen will need to clear the NFL's COVID-19 protocols before seeing action again, and the Bengals will be left without their top backup behind starter Joe Burrow for the time being. Jake Browning will slot in as Cincinnati's No. 2 quarterback until Allen returns.

Another preseason start Allen is expected to start for Joe Burrow during Friday's preseason game at Washington, Kelsey Conway of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Impact Coach Zac Taylor has held out Burrow for both of the Bengals' first two exhibitions, as the second-year signal-caller still is just nine months removed from suffering a torn ACL, torn MCL and other structural damage in his left knee. In preseason Week 1 in Tampa Bay, Allen completed seven of 10 passes for 77 yards and an interception while working the entire first half. Re-ups with Bengals Allen signed a one-year contract with the Bengals on Tuesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.

Impact Allen started five games last season after Joe Burrow tore his ACL in Week 11. The 28-year-old Allen struggled but was serviceable, completing 63 percent of his passes for 925 yards (6.5 YPA), five touchdowns and four interceptions. Burrow has said he thinks that he'll be ready for Week 1. However, there's still a long road to recovery ahead. Allen would likely start under center if Burrow needs additional time.

Impact After putting together some valiant efforts filling in for Joe Burrow (knee), Allen fell flat in the season finale. He concluded the 2020 season having made four appearances and posting five touchdowns, three interceptions and 925 passing yards. Allen was playing the season on a one-year deal, meaning he will enter the offseason as an unrestricted free agent. Given the uncertain timeline for Burrow, the Bengals could opt to re-sign Allen to an affordable short-term deal.
