Danica Patrick issued stiff penalty for trying to wreck David Gilliland

Matt Kenseth wasn’t the only big-name driver penalized by NASCAR on Tuesday.

Danica Patrick, who tried to deliberately wreck David Gilliland in Sunday’s race at Martinsville Speedway after the two tangled earlier in the day, was assessed a Behavioral Penalty from NASCAR for actions in violation of Sections 12.1, 12.8 of the NASCAR rule book.

As part of the penalty, NASCAR fined Patrick $50,000, docked the Stewart-Haas Racing driver 25 series championship driver points and placed her on NASCAR probation through Dec. 31.

As a result of the penalty, Patrick fell from 24th to 27th in the Sprint Cup Series standings — the same place she finished as a rookie in 2013.
