However, he showed speed throughout the weekend to kick off the new IndyCar season, finishing with the fastest lap time in Practice 1 before qualifying ninth. Kirkwood caught a break early in the race, as a caution on Lap 1 allowed him to quickly ditch his alternate tire and run a traditional race strategy. That allowed him to move up through the field and walk away with 30 points in a solid opening weekend.
