Starting Sunday's game Velasquez will start Sunday's series finale against the Marlins, Meghan Montemurro of The Athletic reports.

Impact The 28-year-old had yet to be confirmed as a member of the Phillies' starting rotation, but he'll take the mound in the final game of the opening series. Velasquez has been up-and-down over the past few seasons and posted a 4.91 ERA and 1.39 WHIP last season, but he's performed well in summer camp and may benefit from the change in the team's pitching coach this offseason.

Impresses in intrasquad action Velasquez looked quite good in an intrasquad game Tuesday, Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports.

Impact Velasquez threw four innings, striking out six while allowing just two hits and a single walk in his second impressive outing of summer camp. The Phillies haven't officially named him their fifth starter, but it seems as though he has the edge for the role, with manager Joe Girardi saying, "I don't think you can ignore what he's doing." Velasquez has continually failed to deliver on his promise in four seasons with the Phillies, struggling to a 4.91 ERA last season, but a change in pitching coach could help improve his numbers this season, as the previous regime emphasized throwing up in the zone in a way that didn't seem to suit him well.

Impact Vince Velasquez has put on a strong performance early in summer training and appears to have the upper hand with just over a week before Opening Day. Regardless, Pivetta will remain stretched out, as the protocols for any player who potentially has COVID-19 could quickly open up a spot in the rotation. Zack Wheeler is also expected to miss some time early in the season while on paternity leave, so at least some starting chances will be available.

Battling back spasms Eflin is considered day-to-day due to back spasms, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports.

Impact The issue doesn't appear to be serious, but it's prevented Eflin from facing hitters in any of the Phillies' intrasquad games. WIth Opening Day less than two weeks away, it's quite possible Eflin misses a turn in the rotation or is at least on a fairly low pitch count early on. With Zack Wheeler also set to miss time early due to the birth of his first child, there's a good chance both Vince Velasquez and Nick Pivetta are in the Phillies' rotation to start the year. Highly-rated prospect Spencer Howard could even get a chance right away, as well, despite the fact that he's yet to reach Triple-A.
