Robbie Ray - Awarded Opening Day nod Manager Scott Servais said Thursday that Ray will start the Mariners' Opening Day game April 7 in Minnesota, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports.
Impact Ray will unseat Marco Gonzales as the Mariners' No. 1 starter this season after Seattle brought him aboard on a five-year, $115 million deal following his improbable run to the American League's Cy Young Award in 2021 while he was with Toronto. The southpaw has always made bats miss at a prolific clip, but he reached a new level of success thanks largely to cutting his walk rate all the way down to 6.7 percent last season after turning in rates north of 10 percent in each of the previous four years. So long as he proves that he can keep the free passes to a minimum, Ray shouldn't take too much of a step back statistically with the move from Toronto to Seattle.

J.P. Crawford - Not in Thursday's lineup Crawford (mouth) isn't in the lineup for Thursday's Cactus League game against the Guardians.
Impact The team erroneously included Crawford in the initial lineup, but Dylan Moore will instead receive the start at shortstop. Crawford is down for a couple days after undergoing a dental procedure Wednesday, and he should be back on the field in the near future.

J.P. Crawford - Back in action Thursday Crawford (mouth) is starting at shortstop and batting eighth in Thursday's Cactus League game against Cleveland.
Impact Crawford was expected to be out a few days after undergoing a dental procedure Wednesday, but he'll instead rejoin the lineup a day later. The 27-year-old posted career highs with a .714 OPS, nine home runs and 54 RBI in 160 games for the Mariners last season and will be the everyday starter at shortstop again in 2022.

Julio RodrĂguez - Learning day Wednesday Rodriguez made a couple mistakes in Wednesday's game against the Cubs, but is back in the lineup Thursday, Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times reports.
Impact He hit a ground-rule double to right-center but failed to score on a Ty France single after getting deked by third baseman Jonathan Villar, who acted as if a throw was coming toward him and that he was preparing to make a tag. Rodriguez didn't see the third-base coach waving home, so it cost the team a run. He also lost a flyball in the sun and struck out in his final three plate appearances, all on offspeed stuff, mostly out of the zone. The game's top prospect is hitting .304/.360/.565 with one home run, three doubles, nine strikeouts and two walks in 23 at-bats. He has primarily played center field.

A summer to remember: How Mariners pitcher Paul Sewald finally found his footing When Sewald arrived in Peoria last spring, he was on a minor-league contract with no guarantees. He then made his mark in Seattle.
