Braves recall rookie Waldrep while Marlins add Gusto as Game 1 starters in split doubleheader

The Atlanta Braves have recalled rookie right-hander Hurston Waldrep from Triple-A Gwinnett to start the first game of a split doubleheader against the Miami Marlins

Up as 27th man The Marlins added Gusto to their roster as the 27th man for Saturday's doubleheader against Atlanta.
Impact Gusto will make his Marlins debut Saturday while starting the first game of Saturday's twin bill. The 26-year-old rookie logged a 4.92 ERA and 1.43 WHIP through 86 innings with the Astros, though he pitched six innings of one-run ball during his most recent MLB outing July 30 against Washington. He'll likely head back to Triple-A following Saturday's festivities.

Optioned to Triple-A The Marlins optioned Gusto to Triple-A Jacksonville on Friday.
Impact Miami acquired Gusto from Houston on Thursday, but he won't immediately join the big-league club. The right-hander made 24 appearances (14 starts) with the Astros this year and had a 4.92 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 87:28 K:BB across 86 innings. It's likely only a matter of time before he receives his first look with the Marlins.

Bound for Miami The Astros traded Gusto to the Marlins on Thursday in exchange for Jesus Sanchez, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.
Impact After tossing six innings of one-run ball and picking up his seventh win of the season Wednesday, Gusto will now provide the Marlins' pitching staff with an arm capable of being used in the rotation and out of the bullpen. The 26-year-old righty owns a rather uninspiring 4.92 ERA on the season, however, so he'd likely work in the back end of the Marlins' rotation or as a low-leverage reliever.

Sharp in seventh win Gusto (7-4) earned the win Wednesday against the Nationals, allowing one run on four hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out five.
Impact It was an impressive bounce-back performance from Gusto, who picked up his third quality start of the season after giving up eight runs in just 3.1 innings his last time out against the A's. Overall, the 26-year-old Gusto sports a 4.92 ERA with a 1.43 WHIP and 87:28 K:BB across 86 innings this year. While the right-hander certainly pitched well enough to earn another look in the rotation, Gusto could find himself back in the bullpen with both Spencer Arrighetti (thumb) and Cristian Javier (elbow) nearing returns.

Jose Altuve's four-hit game powers Astros to 9-1 win over Nationals

Getting another start Gusto is scheduled to start Wednesday's game against the Nationals in Houston.
Impact Gusto will pick up a second straight start, despite being roughed up for eight earned runs in 3.1 innings in his return to the rotation last week against the Athletics following three consecutive relief appearances. The right-hander could be headed back to the bullpen in short order, as the Astros could bring aboard another starter prior to Thursday's trade deadline, and several other injured rotation candidates are in the midst of rehab assignments and could be activated within the next couple of weeks.

Astros square off against the Nationals with series tied 1-1

Both the Houston Astros and the Washington Nationals are looking for a series win with a victory on Wednesday
JULY 30, 2025 • Associated Press
Lit up in fourth loss Gusto (6-4) allowed eight runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out five over 3.1 innings to take the loss Friday versus the Athletics.
Impact Filling in for a rotation that lost Lance McCullers (finger blister) and Brandon Walter (elbow), Gusto was unable to provide much length in his return to a starting role. He gave up two home runs, and reliever Nick Hernandez was tagged for another long ball just after Gusto's exit. Gusto is now at a 5.18 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 82:27 K:BB through 80 innings across 23 appearances (13 starts). The Astros have a full rotation's worth of pitchers on the injured list and none are expected back before August, so it's likely Gusto will be called on for at least one more start, which is projected to be at home versus the Nationals next week.

Will start Friday Gusto will start Friday's game against the Athletics, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
Impact With Lance McCullers (blister) going to the 15-day IL on Tuesday, the Astros needed someone to fill the hole in the rotation. Gusto has appeared in 22 games for Houston this season, making 12 starts, and sports a 4.46 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 77:26 K:BB across 76.2 innings of work. He's served up 11 home runs and has thrown more than 90 pitches in an outing just once in 2025.

Shifts to bullpen Gusto has made his last three appearances for the Astros as a reliever, covering 6.1 innings in total while allowing two earned runs on six hits and two walks while striking out fi...
Impact Gusto has made 12 starts for Houston this season and had been a fixture in the rotation since late May, but the Astros transitioned him to the bullpen shortly before the All-Star break. In Houston's final series of the first half, Gusto came on in long relief July 11 following a short start by Lance McCullers, and he made a pair of one-inning appearances in last weekend's series in Seattle. McCullers has since been placed on the injured list due to a blister on his right hand, so Gusto could be needed once again to plug one of the holes in the rotation. Houston is listing Hunter Brown and Colton Gordon as its starters for the final two games of its upcoming four-game series with the Athletics, but Gusto could be called upon to start or work in bulk relief Thursday or Friday.

Contains Dodgers for sixth win Gusto (6-3) allowed one run on four hits and one walk over six innings to pick up the win in Sunday's contest against the Dodgers. He struck out one.
Impact The Houston right-hander was favored over Colton Gordon to start the series finale at Los Angeles. Gusto impressed in this 80-pitch appearance, generating a solid 13 whiffs despite striking out just one. The only blemish on his outing came in the second inning via a Dalton Rushing RBI double, as Gusto notched his second quality start of the season. Given this solid performance against the league's top scoring offense, the 26-year-old is likely to garner another turn in the rotation before the All-Star break. If Gusto continues to start, his next outing would line up to come against the Rangers at home next weekend.
