Marlins open 3-game series with the Nationals

The Miami Marlins begin a three-game series at home against the Washington Nationals on Friday

Matches season high in punchouts Gusto took a no-decision against the Reds on Saturday, allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits and no walks in 4.2 innings. He struck out six.
Impact A fielding error in right field by Esteury Ruiz kept both of Cincinnati's third-inning runs off Gusto's line, but the hurler later served up a pair of solo home runs in the fifth frame. The six strikeouts did tie a season high for Gusto, but he's been taken yard at least one time in each of his past four starts. The right-hander, who has a shaky 4.70 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 49:14 K:BB over 53.2 innings, could struggle for streaming appeal in his next scheduled outing against an upstart Nationals lineup.

Goes four innings in no-decision Gusto did not factor into the decision in Sunday's 12-3 win over the Angels, allowing two runs on three hits and one walk with four strikeouts over four innings.
Impact Gusto threw 44 of 60 pitches for strikes, settling in with two scoreless innings after allowing runs in each of his first two frames. It was a short outing considering the 27-year-old logged 11 innings over his previous two turns, including an 83-pitch quality start Tuesday. He owns a 4.78 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 43:14 K across 49 innings this season and lines up for a road matchup with the Reds next weekend.

Dealt tough-luck loss Gusto (0-3) took the loss Tuesday against Atlanta, allowing one run on five hits while striking out five over six innings.
Impact Gusto's only mistake came on the first pitch of the second inning, when Ozzie Albies launched a solo homer. Miami's offense provided little support, failing to score until it was too late in the ninth inning. The six-inning effort marked his longest outing of his season. It was a bounce-back performance for the right-hander, who in his previous start against the Phillies surrendered six runs. Gusto owns a 4.80 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 39:13 K:BB across 45 innings this season and will look for his first win of 2026 in his next scheduled start Sunday against the Angels.

Draws start Tuesday Gusto is slated as the starting pitcher for Miami's matchup against Atlanta on Tuesday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
Impact As the Marlins open a crucial series against Atlanta, Gusto will start Tuesday's affair. In the 27-year-old's last start, he allowed six runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out three. On the season, the right-hander owns a 5.31 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 34:13 K:BB in 39 innings.

Tagged for six runs in no-decision Gusto did not factor into the decision Wednesday against the Phillies, allowing six runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out three over five innings.
Impact Gusto breezed through the first two innings before Philadelphia's lineup broke through, scoring six runs over the next three frames. The fifth inning proved especially costly, with Trea Turner launching a solo homer as part of a three-run rally. The six runs marked the most Gusto has allowed in an outing this season. The right-hander exited in line for the loss, but Miami answered with six runs of their own over the next few innings to erase the deficit in the eventual victory. Across eight starts and five relief appearances, Gusto owns a 5.31 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 34:13 K:BB over 39 innings.

Drawing another start Gusto is slated to start Wednesday's game against the Phillies at loanDepot Park.
Impact Gusto will be making his second straight turn through the Miami rotation as a replacement for the injured Max Meyer (neck). The right-hander took the hill on two days' rest his last time out Friday against the Padres and was lifted after tossing 3.1 innings and 57 pitches, but he should have a slightly longer leash Wednesday.

Records no-decision Friday Gusto did not factor into the decision in Friday's 4-2 loss to the Padres, allowing one run on two hits and one walk while striking out four over 3.1 innings.
Impact Gusto left the game after 57 pitches (37 strikes), one out into the fourth. The 27-year-old pitched on just two days' rest after recording two innings of work against Houston on Tuesday. On the campaign, Gusto now owns a 4.50 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 31:11 K:BB in 34 innings.

Rengifo's two-run HR lifts Padres past skidding Marlins 4-2, extending Miami's losing streak to 10

Pinch-hitter Luis Rengifo hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the eighth inning and the San Diego Padres beat Miami 4-2 on Friday night, extending the Marlins’ losing streak to 10

Netting start Friday Gusto will start Friday's game versus the Padres, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
Impact He's filling in for the injured Max Meyer (neck). Gusto made a two-inning relief appearance Tuesday in Houston and hasn't stretched out to a typical starter's workload since mid-June, so the Marlins will need to utilize their bullpen heavily in Friday's series opener.

Returns to majors The Marlins recalled Gusto from Triple-A Jacksonville on Thursday.
Impact Gusto has turned in a 5.55 ERA and 1.60 WHIP across 24.1 innings with the Marlins this season, but he'll return to Miami on Thursday to provide the big club with an additional long-relief option for its final stretch of games before the All-Star break. Zach Brzykcy was optioned to Jacksonville in a corresponding move.
JULY 9 • ROTOWIRE
Optioned to Jacksonville The Marlins optioned Gusto to Triple-A Jacksonville on Friday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
Impact Gusto made five starts for Miami, collecting a 5.06 ERA and 18:10 K:BB over 21.1 innings. With Gusto returning to Jacksonville, Janson Junk (shin) appears set to rejoin the Marlins' rotation next week.
JULY 3 • ROTOWIRE
Goes three innings vs. Rockies Gusto did not factor into the decision Thursday against Colorado, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out two over three innings.
Impact After he was handed a 2-0 lead in the first inning, Gusto gave up a solo home run to Mickey Moniak in the bottom half of the frame before the Rockies tacked on two more runs in the third. Gusto has seen a limited workload since joining the Marlins rotation -- he's yet to make it through five innings in six starts. Overall, the right-hander sports a 5.55 ERA with a 1.60 WHIP and 22:10 K:BB across 24.1 innings.

JULY 2 • BLEACHERNATION.COM
Looks good in another short start Gusto surrendered three hits and issued one walk while striking out four batters over 3.1 scoreless innings in a no-decision against St. Louis on Saturday.
Impact Gusto continues to be held to a throttled workload -- over five starts, he's yet to complete more than 4.2 innings and has gone beyond 70 pitches just once. Though the right-hander was limited to 63 pitches Saturday, he pitched quite well, throwing 41 of those offerings for strikes and limiting the Cardinals to three singles, a hit-by-pitch and a walk. Gusto was rocked for five runs over 4.2 frames against Philadelphia on June 15, but he's rebounded nicely by giving up just one run across 7.2 innings while registering a 10:3 K:BB over his subsequent two starts. That should earn him continued turns in the rotation -- at least until Janson Junk (shin) is ready to return -- but Gusto's fantasy value will be limited until he's able to start pitching deeper into games.
