Throwing off mound Lowder (forearm) is throwing off a mound in Arizona, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports.
Impact After missing all of spring training with a forearm strain, Lowder has taken the next steps in his recovery. He was scheduled to throw again Sunday and will continue to ramp up. The right-hander may eventually pitch in the majors this season, but Lowder is expected to begin 2025 at Triple-A Louisville.

Moves to 15-day IL The Reds placed Lowder (elbow) on the 15-day injured list Wednesday.
Impact After turning in a 1.17 ERA -- albeit with poor underlying metrics -- over his six starts with the Reds late in the 2024 season, Lowder headed into the winter with some momentum. However, Lowder never made much of a push for a spot in the Reds' Opening Day rotation, as he was limited in his throwing program early in camp due to right elbow soreness and never ended up making a Cactus League appearance. Lowder is reportedly close to throwing bullpen sessions, but he'll likely need a few weeks to ramp up before he's ready to begin a rehab assignment. The 23-year-old righty has minor-league options remaining and could end up sticking around at Triple-A Louisville once he completes his throwing progression and is activated from the IL.

Still throwing on flat ground Lowder (shoulder) has been throwing off flat ground the last few weeks since being cleared by the medical staff, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.
Impact Lowder said he's progressing through the throwing program and believes he'll be on the "mound here shortly," although there's been no scheduled established. The recently turned 23-year-old right-hander had been a candidate for the rotation, but it now appears likely he'll begin the season on the injured list before eventually heading to Triple-A Louisville. Lowder was impressive in a brief stint at the end of the 2024 regular season, posting a 1.17 ERA over six starts (30.2 innings).

Resumes throwing Monday Lowder (elbow) will begin a throwing progression Monday, Charlie Goldsmith of Charlie's Chalkboard reports.
Impact Lowder has been shut down in the early days of camp due to right elbow soreness that developed during his throwing sessions in January. The righty said Monday that he feels "great with where I'm at now" and views the brief shutdown period as a blessing in disguise because he was able to fine-tune some of his mechanics. Opening Day availability remains possible for Lowder, but the Reds will proceed cautiously with the young righty.

Team exercising caution Lowder (elbow) is being handled cautiously to the point where he may not be ready by Opening Day, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. "I wouldn't even put an artificial timetable on h...
Impact Lowder, who reported slow recoveries from throwing sessions in January, underwent an MRI which showed no structural damage. During the offseason, Lowder worked on his four-pitch mix of four-seamers, sinkers, sliders and changeups. He had a focus on landing his breaking ball to batters on both sides of the plate. Francona said once the right-hander is ready to pick up a ball, which he said could be in a couple of days, there will be a throwing progression first.

Dealing with sore elbow Lowder's throwing program is being limited due to right elbow soreness, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.
Impact An MRI on Lowder's elbow showed no structural damage, which is certainly good news. However, any elbow-related issue is cause for concern. If healthy, Lowder will be competing for a spot in the Reds' rotation, but this injury could throw a wrench into that even if it's ultimately not serious. Slated to turn 23 in March, Lowder, posted a 1.17 ERA over six starts last season, although that came with a 22:14 K:BB across 30.2 innings.

Opening Day status uncertain The Reds currently have (at least) six starters that could be on the Opening Day roster, following the Brady Singer trade, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. In...
Impact Greene, Singer and Martinez are shoe-ins for three rotation spots, and after that it's a little less certain. Both Abbott and Lodolo have health concerns, and Lodolo for that matter is coming off of a rough season. Lowder posted a 1.17 ERA and 1.27 WHIP over six late-season starts after roaring through the Reds' minor league system. It's plausible that they could decide he needs more time to develop, especially if Lodolo and Abbott are ready to go.

Finishes with five scoreless Lowder did not factor into the decision in Saturday's 3-0 loss to the Cubs, allowing three hits and three walks with one strikeout over five scoreless innings.
Impact Lowder generated only six whiffs on 91 pitches but logged his fourth scoreless outing in six chances since being promoted to the Reds. He'll finish the year with a 1.17 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 22:14 K:BB across 30.2 major-league innings and should factor into the club's rotation plans next season.

Impresses in second win Lowder (2-1) got the win Saturday against the Pirates, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out four over five scoreless innings.
Impact Lowder worked in and out of trouble Saturday, including a bases-loaded jam in the fifth to close out his day. The rookie right-hander has now kept opponents off the scoreboard in three of his five career starts. The seventh overall pick in the 2023 draft lowered his ERA to 1.40 over his first 25.2 innings.

Saddled with tough-luck loss Lowder (1-2) was saddled with the loss Sunday, allowing three runs on six hits and one walk across 5.1 innings against the Twins. He struck out five.
Impact Lowder entered the sixth with a one-run lead but was pulled after having allowed two batters to reach base with one out in the inning. Each of those baserunners later came around to score, saddling Lowder with two additional earned runs and saddling him with a tough-luck defeat. The 22-year-old rookie has been highly effective across four starts since earning the call from Triple-A, having allowed just one earned run prior to the three runs allowed Sunday. An encouraging trend is that he's also kept the walks in check, having allowed just one over his last two starts after allowing eight over his first two appearances. He's currently set up to make his next start in a home matchup against the Pirates.
SEPTEMBER 15, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Strong again in first win Lowder (1-1) allowed five hits and struck out three without walking a batter over five shutout innings to earn the win over the Cardinals on Tuesday.
Impact Lowder continues to impress in the majors, having allowed just one run over 15.1 innings across his first three starts. He showed improvement in his one weak spot by issuing zero walks Tuesday after walking four batters in each of his first two outings. The right-hander is now at a 0.59 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 12:8 K:BB. He's tentatively projected for a road start versus the Twins this weekend.
