Shows improved control Saturday
Lowder allowed one run on five hits and two walks while striking out six batters over 5.2 innings in a no-decision against Arizona on Saturday.
Impact
Lowder returned from a one-month absence against St. Louis in his previous start and looked quite rusty, issuing five walks over three scoreless innings. The right-hander was much more in control Saturday, handing out a tolerable two free passes and throwing 62 of 96 pitches for strikes. Lowder also racked up a solid 15 whiffs and fanned six batters, and the only run he allowed came on a first-inning homer by Corbin Carroll. This was a promising outing for Lowder, but he's projected for a tough challenge his next time out, as he's lined up for a road matchup against the Yankees.

Signs of rust in return
Lowder took a no-decision Sunday against the Cardinals, allowing no runs on one hit and five walks in three innings. He struck out four.
Impact
After missing just over three weeks of action with right shoulder discomfort, Lowder showed plenty of rust in his return to the major leagues Sunday following a lone minor-league rehab appearance. The 24-year-old right-hander threw only 34 of his 70 pitches for strikes, also walking a season-worst five hitters, but he at least managed to keep St. Louis off the board. Lowder has issued at least three passes in three consecutive outings en route to posting a shaky 5.01 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 31:23 K:BB over 41.1 innings, so he'll be searching for some control his next time out versus Arizona.

Officially activated ahead of start
The Reds activated Lowder (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list Sunday.
Impact
Lowder landed on the injured list May 13 due to right shoulder discomfort, and he's slated to make his return as Sunday's starting pitcher after missing just over three weeks. The right-hander tossed 70 pitches for Triple-A Louisville on Tuesday in his lone rehab appearance, so he may be held to a pitch count in his return to the big-league rotation. To make room for Lowder on the 26-man roster, Cincinnati optioned reliever Luis Mey to Louisville.

Confirmed for start Sunday
Reds manager Terry Francona confirmed Wednesday that Lowder (shoulder) will start Sunday's game in St. Louis, Charlie Clifford of NBC 5 Cincinnati reports.
Impact
Francona had indicated previously that Lowder would rejoin the Reds' rotation for Sunday's series finale as long as he got through Tuesday's rehab start with Triple-A Louisville without any hiccups. That happened, as the righty had an 8:0 K:BB over five innings while yielding three runs. Lowder threw 70 pitches on Tuesday, so he will not be fully stretched out against the Cardinals. The right-hander has been sidelined since early May due to right shoulder discomfort.

Throws 70 pitches in rehab start
Lowder (shoulder) allowed three runs on six hits while striking out eight with no walks over five innings in a rehab start for Triple-A Louisville on Tuesday.
Impact
After appearing in a simulated game last week, Lowder kicked off a rehab assignment in impressive fashion, throwing 70 pitches (50 strikes). It's unclear what the right-hander's next step is, but the innings and the pitch count sets him up for a possible return to Cincinnati's rotation in five days.

Making rehab start Tuesday
Lowder (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville on Tuesday, Charlie Goldsmith of Fox 19 Now Cincinnati reports.
Impact
Lowder threw a successful live batting practice session Wednesday, clearing the way for him to pitch in an official game. The right-hander is slated to throw 70 pitches in Tuesday's outing, so it might be the only rehab start he needs before rejoining the Reds' rotation. Lowder has been sidelined since early May with right shoulder discomfort.

Slated to face hitters
Lowder (shoulder) is expected to face hitters Wednesday, MLB.com reports.

Will face hitters early next week
Lowder (shoulder) is expected to face hitters early next week, Charlie Goldsmith of of Fox 19 Now Cincinnati reports.
Impact
Lowder recently resumed throwing off the mound as he works his way back from an AC joint issue in his right shoulder, and he's almost ready to face hitters. The righty said he's "pushed to be aggressive to get back as fast as possible," but he will not quite be ready when first eligible Monday. It shouldn't be long after that, however, as long as Lowder's recovery continues at its current trajectory.

Resuming throwing program
Reds manager Terry Francona said that Lowder (shoulder) will resume throwing Thursday, Charlie Goldsmith of Fox 19 Now Cincinnati reports.
Impact
Lowder was given an injection in the injured AC joint of his right shoulder earlier this week and officially landed on the 15-day injured list Wednesday. The right-hander's absence could be relatively brief, but until Lowder is ready, the newly-signed Chris Paddack will hold down a slot in the Reds' rotation.

Move to IL made official
The Reds placed Lowder on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with right shoulder discomfort.
Impact
Lowder was forced to exit his start last Thursday with right shoulder trouble and subsequently was given an injection in the AC joint. He does not have any structural damage, so Lowder has a chance to return soon, but it will depend on how he does after he's cleared to ramp up throwing again. Chris Paddack was signed to take Lowder's roster spot and should also hold down a slot in the rotation while Lowder is out.
