INJURIES

Sent back to Triple-A Pittsburgh optioned Priester to Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday.
Impact Priester got a six-start run in the Pirates' starting rotation and struggled to a 9.10 ERA, 1.92 WHIP and 23:18 K:BB across 28.2 innings. It's uncertain whether the 22-year-old right-hander will get another look in the majors before the end of the 2023 season. Yohan Ramirez has been called up in a corresponding move.

Falls to Mets Priester (2-2) took the loss Monday, allowing six runs on seven hits and three walks over five innings against the Mets. He struck out three.
Impact Priester threw a season-high 102 pitches though he'd allow at least one run in each of his five innings. It's been a rough start to Priester's big-league career -- his ERA is now up to 9.10 with a 1.92 WHIP and 23:18 K:BB through his first six starts (28.2 innings). While the rebuilding Pirates can afford to give the 22-year-old right-hander an extended look in the rotation, Priester doesn't appear ready to be a reliable option against major-league lineups. His next start is tentatively scheduled for this weekend in Minnesota.

Another short outing Priester came away with a no-decision in Wednesday's 6-5 loss to Atlanta, giving up four runs on nine hits and a walk over four innings. He struck out four.
Impact While his final line didn't look like much on the surface, Priester managed to avoid serving up any homers to the league's most dangerous offense, and he walked one batter or fewer for the first time in five MLB starts. Despite the small signs of progress, the rookie right-hander is still saddled with an 8.75 ERA and 1.90 WHIP through his first 23.2 innings for Pittsburgh with a 20:15 K:BB. He'll try to take another step forward in his next outing, likely to come on the road early next week against the Mets.

Tosses four innings Priester yielded three runs on five hits and three walks over four-plus innings in Friday's win over Milwaukee. He struck out three and did not factor in the decision.
Impact Priester coughed up a pair of runs in the first inning but otherwise held the Brewers in check until Carlos Santana led off the fifth with a solo shot. Friday's start was Priester's shortest but it was also his first time allowing fewer than four runs. The right-handed rookie has registered an 8.69 ERA with a 16:14 K:BB through four career starts. Priester is currently lined up to face Atlanta at home next week.

Earns win despite command struggles Priester (2-1) earned the win Saturday, allowing five runs on five hits and six walks over five innings against Philadelphia. He struck out seven.
Impact Priester struggled with his command for most of the afternoon, issuing a walk to Kyle Schwarber in the first at-bat of the game before hitting Brandon Marsh with a pitch in the top of the third. The right-hander still managed to get through the first innings unscathed despite his command issues, but it caught up with him in the fourth when he allowed four runs to come across following two early walks. Despite the poor outing in which he walked a season-high six batters, Priester was able to come away with his second straight win while also marking a season high with seven strikeouts. He now holds a 9.19 ERA through his first three major league starts to go along with an ugly 13:11 K:BB.

Collects first major-league win Priester (1-1) allowed four runs on four hits and three walks while striking out four over 5.1 innings to earn the win Monday over the Padres.
Impact Priester allowed a pair of home runs to Ha-Seong Kim, which accounted for three of the four runs on his line. Aside from those missteps, Priester did reasonably well in his second big-league start, throwing 89 pitches (50 strikes). The 23-year-old right-hander has allowed 11 runs over 10.2 innings to begin his career, and a 6:5 K:BB isn't all that inspiring, but he may get a chance to learn on the fly. He's tentatively lined up for a weekend start versus the Phillies if the Pirates don't skip him in the rotation -- an option they could take given their off days Thursday and next Monday.

Getting another start Monday Priester is scheduled to start Monday's game against the Padres in San Diego.
Impact Priester was roughed up for seven earned runs on seven hits and two walks in his MLB debut July 17 against Cleveland, but he was at least able to save the Pirates' bullpen to some degree by covering 5.1 innings. Despite the poor showing last week, Priester will get another chance to prove he's worthy of sticking around as the Bucs' No. 5 starter. He'll return to the hill Monday on six days' rest.

Stumbles in debut Priester (0-1) took the loss Monday, allowing seven runs on seven hits and two walks over 5.1 innings against Cleveland. He struck out two.
Impact Priester started strong with three perfect innings before things unraveled. He gave up three runs over the next two innings before Cleveland tagged him with four runs in the sixth. The 22-year-old threw 47 of 73 pitches for strikes in his MLB debut. If he sticks around for another start, Priester is currently lined up to face the Angels on the road this weekend.

Contract officially selected Priester had his contract selected by the Pirates and he'll officially start Monday against the Guardians.
Impact Operating as one of Pittsburgh's best prospects, Priester will get his first shot at big-league competition Monday. The right-hander has compiled a solid 4.31 ERA and 8.7 K/9 ratio in Triple-A this season and he'll take on a Cleveland lineup that's been slumping lately, averaging 3.8 runs scored over their last 10 contests.
JULY 17, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Added to taxi squad The Pirates added Priester to the taxi squad Sunday ahead of his major-league debut Monday against the Guardians.
Impact Priester will have a day to get acclimated before the Pirates officially select him to the 40-man and 26-man rosters. Widely considered a top pitching prospect in the organization, Priester has pitched to a 4.31 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 84:35 K:BB in 18 starts (87.2 innings) with Triple-A Indianapolis this season. The 22-year-old is an athletic right-hander with a four-pitch mix, and he will get a relatively soft landing in his debut against a Guardians team that ranks bottom five in scoring offense.
JULY 16, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Promotion incoming Priester will be called up to make his MLB debut either Monday or Tuesday against the Guardians, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Impact Priester hasn't been particularly special in Triple-A Indianapolis this season, posting a 4.31 ERA and 1.36 WHIP alongside a 84:35 K:BB through 87.2 innings. Nonetheless, he will be called upon to round out the Pirates' rotation.
JULY 15, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Better results in May Priester has a 1.13 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 19 strikeouts in 24 innings over four May starts for Triple-A Indianapolis.
Impact His 7.1 K/9 over that stretch leaves a lot to be desired, but Priester has averaged six innings per start this month, which in itself is an impressive feat for a 22-year-old pitcher at Triple-A. Priester had a 7.78 ERA and 1.68 WHIP in 19.2 innings across five April starts. He could get a look in the majors sometime this summer if he remains healthy, and the strength of his game will be generating weak contact (56.2 percent groundball rate).
