Ji Hwan Bae - Sitting MondayBae is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Cardinals.
ImpactBae has handled a near-everyday role since his call-up from Triple-A Indianapolis on Sept. 23 and has picked up starts at three different positions. Though he's on the bench Monday, it wouldn't be surprising if he picked up starts in the Pirates' final two games of the season.

Ben Gamel - Gets breather MondayGamel isn't starting Monday against the Cardinals.
ImpactGamel went 2-for-7 with a homer, a double, three RBI and two runs over his last two games, but he'll head to the bench for the second time in the last three matchups. Diego Castillo is taking over at first base and batting seventh.

Nick Mears - Joins big-league bullpenThe Pirates recalled Mears from Triple-A Indianapolis on Monday, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports.
ImpactStarting pitcher Luis Ortiz was optioned to Triple-A to open up a spot on the 28-man active roster for Mears, who will be available out of the bullpen over the Bucs' final three games of the season. Mears has missed most of the season while recovering from arthroscopic elbow surgery, but he's been healthy since late July and was pitching regularly out of the Triple-A bullpen prior to his promotion. Over his final nine outings at Triple-A, Mears allowed three runs (two earned) and struck out nine over 12.1 innings.

Luis Ortiz - Heads back to minorsThe Pirates optioned Ortiz to Triple-A Indianapolis on Monday, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports.
ImpactSince Ortiz wasn't scheduled to pitch again in 2022 after making a start Saturday in St. Louis, the Pirates chose to option him to open up room on the 28-man active roster for a player who can contribute over their final three games. Though he failed to escape the first inning against the Cardinals while serving up six earned runs, Ortiz still delivered a solid 4.50 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 17:10 K:BB in 16 innings over his first four big-league starts. He should get the chance to compete for a spot in the Bucs' Opening Day rotation next spring.
